xp virtual machine fails to start in Win 7
XPM fails to start the virtual machine with a message "no boot filename received" and an error PXE-E53. I have removed and re-installed the XPM and Virtual PC software several times. I have tried the different ways to set up the virtual hard drive. I saw some references that it might be terminal server client looking to boot from the server so that feature was disable in BIOS. It gets to the point of looking at the network connection. It is set to use the same network connection at the Win 7 host. It displays the correct MAC address. After about 40 seconds it fails with the "no boot filename received message" in all cases. The other thing I've not seen before is that you cannot set the Integration features. They appear to be clicked on but grayed out. If you try to stop the failed to initialize XP machine with the CTRL-ALT-DEL it won't. If you click the X to close the window you get a three line menu. Picking Shut Down gets a message that it won't work but asks if you want turn it off (sorry I did not get the exact wording as the snip that was made on the Win 7 side has not shown up in my email). I temporarily disabled the firewall and anti-virus and got the same failures.Bob Lin, MS-MVP Networking, Internet, Routing, VPN Troubleshooting on http://www.ChicagoTech.net How to Setup Windows, Network, VPN & Remote Access on http://www.howtonetworking.com

Hi, From the message, it seems the computer boots from the network instead of the hard drive. Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Go to Windows Virtual PC settings and ensure the Hard Disk 1 is pointing to the correct VHD file. 2. Disable Integration Features and have a try. 3. Check BIOS settings: 1) Disable Integration Features in Windows Virtual PC settings. 2) Start the virtual machine and keep pressing Delete to enter the BIOS. 3) In BIOS SETUP UTILITY, switch to Boot and go to Hard Disk Drives and ensure the Virtual HD exists. 4) Go to Boot Device Priority and ensure the 1st Boot Device is Hard Drive. Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

I tried this after I got the same thing. 1. goes in Setting and enable the cdrom drive to the real physical drive, in my VM, it is d: 2. insert Win XP + sp3 DVD to the physical cdrom drive. 3. click ctl+Alt+del to restart the VM. 4. the VM Boot up from DVD and did a full XP install, including format the Virtual hard drive that you provide during VM creation. 5. After XP installation is completed, click ctl+Alt+del to restart the VM 6. Win XP is running. Notes: MS gives you the VM host base for free. It does not come with the real XP image, you have to install it yourself.
