Well, for all those who are interested, ive worked out the definitive answer to this long ongoing problem myself for "xp firewall slows down telnet and pop requests to other servers". After doing some capture and anlysis of communication between my workstation and server i noticed the server sending some port 113 requests to my workstation in reply to pop and telnet access requests and i think ftp too. Port 113 relates to "ident" username authentication on servers running authentication such as "identd". If the workstation doesnt respond then it can delay the connection. The fix is to put an exception on the workstation firewall such as windows xp firewall to allow port 113 through. To make it real easy for everyone here are the steps for your Windows XP workstation: Start|Control Panel|Windows Firewall|Exceptions|Add Port|TCP Port Number 113|Comment: Authentication of username to server with ident protocol So there you have it. At last...INSTANT log in and connection response for pop, telnet and ftp :) Edward Jozis
