I switched on my computer after 3 months away and now all my word documents are orange and word itself is gone, what happened?

Seems like your computer has been hacked.  There is something called Ransom Hacking, where your documents are encrypted and in order for you to decrypt them, you have to pay a ransom. Usually they drop a note on "My Documents" folder, a text file detailing the claim.

Does this issue only occur on Word, does this occur on other Office app like Excel?

You can try:

1. Restart the computer.

2. Repair the Office from Control Panel

3. Reinstall the Office Application

4. Check virus on the computer.
