wireless association failed due to an unknown reason (Vista HP 32bit)
I guess it's my turn to bring this issue back to the front page. I've got my sister-in-laws Vista laptop next to me and while LAN works fine, WiFi will not work at all. It doesn't work anywhere no matter the router make/model or if it is public, private, or tightly monitored/secured. Any WiFi connection attempt ends with this ever so descriptive statement "wireless association failed due to an unknown reason". Here is what I've done so far: Updated to Vista SP2 Removed Norton 360 Ran Norton 360 cleanup/removal tool Ran Malware Bytes (clean) Deleted all networks and manually entered my own network info Deleted device and driver and installed drivers via Windows Update Deleted device and driver and installed drivers via Gateway website Deleted device and driver and installed drivers via Intel website Bounced my own router (never had to do that before) Tried the reghack for DHCP Broadcast Flag I give up, I'm completely frustrated by this. Aside from reimaging (no guarantee it will work either) I'm at a loss here. She's a student and traveling between home, work, and school and WiFi is pretty important. Without reinstalling Vista and making her locate all the software for school, what else can I do? Is there some secret hotfix I can request that installs Windows 7 and makes this headache go away? I never had a problem with Vista this annoying.

Well, yet another reboot and it works. Not sure what happened or changed, but it's working now.
