windows xp suddenly asking for a password
I am unable to get into my pc, it has sudenly started asking for a password for me to log in, never used one before, that I can remember. I have tried to enter via safe mode, in the hope that I could reset the password, but it wont let me reset without first entering the old one !! Anyone know why it has started to demand a password, or how I can solve this. I am doing a distance learning corse, and all my work is on this laptop...1 person needs an answerI do too

I had this same problem a few days ago and entered what I thought I would have set up as my password although I was pretty sure that I had not used one. It failed. Eventually I just hit return, ie password was presumably blank or null, and that did the trick. Since then the login has remained as the classic version (which I don't want) and the logoff seems to have changed to be a mix of the welcome screen version and the classic logoff. Although I have tried to change back to using the welcome screen to access the pc (by checking the Use the Welcome screen box in Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Change the way the users log on and off) this doesn't work at all. Hope this helps and good luck with your course work.

Glad to be of servcie. I submitted a related problem report asking about why XP suddenly decided to ask for a password and stating that I couldn't get back to using the Welcome Screen. I haven't yet had a reply which cures the problem and I would be interested to know what caused it if anybody knows.
