windows xp shutdown message
At shutdown I see msg: "instruction at 0x0012e615 referenced memory at0x00000001. Them memory could not be written." "Click OK to continue" or "Cancel to Debug." How can I eliminate this nuisance?1 person needs an answerI do too

Something that is running at shutdown is failing. You have to find out what it is so you can troubleshoot accordingly. Shutdown issues are generally caused by a program and/or process that is refusing to exit gracefully. The program and/or process can be from malware or can be legitimate (such as an invasive antivirus like Norton or McAfee). If you are using a Norton or McAfee product, uninstall it and replace with a better program such as NOD32, Kasperksy, or Avast (free). The Windows Firewall is adequate for most people. Shutdown issues can also be caused by old/poorly written drivers so make sure all drivers are updated, particularly on Windows Vista and Windows 7. A.The first step is always to make sure your computer is virus/malware free. http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware B. If the computer is virus/malware-free, drivers are current, and no Norton or McAfee programs are installed, then do clean-boot troubleshooting to see which program/process is the culprit: How to perform a clean boot in Vista and XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796 How to perform a clean boot in Windows Vista or Windows 7 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 C. If you need more information, here is an excellent shutdown troubleshooter - http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm Standard caveat: If troubleshooting the issue is too difficult - and there is absolutely no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a computer repair shop. Thank you Malkeleah, This error message pops up during a Win XP shudown. It goes off by itself without selecting OK or cancel and continues thru a normal shutdown. I am not sure that a clean boot will show me the problem when it is manifested at "shutdown." I am sure I can pay Microsoft at 59.00 to fix it in a phone conversation but I hate to pay that for something that appears to be only a nuisance. Is there a more reasonable tech support option? In any case, thank you very much.

You have to do the entire troubleshooting tree, not just a clean boot. And the clean boot isn't only for startup since the programs/processes that start up with Windows are normally running the whole time the computer is on. If you can't do the systematic troubleshooting that is required yourself, I most certainly would not suggest calling Microsoft for tech support. This is not a slur on MS tech support; it is always preferable to have a skilled tech work on the machine hands-on. While not impossible, it is very difficult to troubleshoot a computer only on the telephone. The most "reasonable" tech support option is for you to do the work which needs to be done very systematically and it can be time-consuming. That is free. As I said, if you don't want to do that (or feel it's outside your area of expertise) take the machine to a local computer tech. Get recommendations from family, friends, colleagues. Do not use a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place. Of course this will not be free but only you can decide what your own time is worth.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Thanks again Malkeleah; Aloha if that is appropriate! The clean boot (XP) procedure worked! It enabled me to identify after MSCONFIG/services the culprit file. In this case it happened to be the MS file "system event notification." I unchecked the box--it seemed to me to be superfluous. I now get a clean unobstructed shutdown. For anyone else, I suppose they could just uncheck that box and it may save the troubleshooting time. With the same MS XP error codes I would assume it is likely the same file. Cheers!

I'm glad you got it sorted. I'm not sure what "system event notification" belongs to and you might still want to investigate further, but otherwise I'm glad things are working. Thanks for letting me know.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Oops! It is back or maybe never went away, but the good news is with your encouragement I found the problem. I purchased two copies of Trend Int Security 3.0. The first copy loaded just fine on three cmptrs. The second is probably a corrupt disc. When Data Theft Protection and WEB threat protection are enabled together I get the shutdown problem. Enabled separately (one or the other), no shutdown error message. And, of course, turning Trend off completely--no shutdown message. When the issue initially surfaced Trend said in two phone support calls that "it is a MSft. problem." They left me at the mercy of Microsoft but after much personal diagnostic time I found the newly installed Trend product to be causing the shutdown error message. I will call Trend Monday (4 Jan) with the new details. So far they have been unwilling to help but now with the specific "proof" that it is absolutely related to the two Trend items enabled simultaneously I do not see how they can deny it is a Trend issue. I would expect them to send a new disc. Oh yes, I did do an uninstall/reinstall of Trend with the same error message surfacing at shutdown. Thanks, and "investigating further" was the right call.

I've never been fond of Trend's consumer products. They've always been buggy and invasive. Maybe you should just get your money back. I recommend NOD32 (commercial); Avast, Avira, or even MS Security Essentials if you want a free product.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
