This issue may occur if Windows update cache is corrupted. The following article outlines how to stop services pertaining to Windows Update, rename system folders, register related DLL files, and then restart the previously mentioned services. This troubleshooting generally applies to all Windows Update related issues. Use the "Fix it" tool from the article belowhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/971058ThanksRenjith

Hi mvenable,
Please try the following suggestions to see if the issue can be resolved:
1. Click Start, type notepad in the Start Search box and then press Enter.
2. Copy and then paste (or type) the following command lines into the Notepad window:
net stop wuauserv
cd %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution
ren Download Download.old
net start wuauserv
3. On the File menu, click Save As , and then type Rename.bat .
4. Click Save as type , and then click All Files (*.*) .
5. Save the Rename.bat file to your desktop.
6. Right-click the Rename.bat file, and then click Run as administrator . If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue . This renames the Download folder.
7. Try to install updates again.
8. If the issue is resolved, delete the Rename.bat file that you created in the previous steps.
Regards,
Linda

Did you get this problem fixed. I know that the posting was 2010 but I don't see a remedy. I, too, am using Windows 7 and cannot even search for updates. I get an error message stating that it "cannot search for updates because the service
is not running." What is this? Anyone know. I haven't been able to run update in over a year.
