I clicked on the above link in Justtohelp's post.... but this is much to complicated... I know nothing about doing computer programming of any sort. I've read quite a few postings on various forums, all who are having the same problem - the 8000FFFF error code when trying to install windows updates or itunes 9 - and some have suggested that it is actually a fault with a previous windows update that was automatically installed by some computers who are set to "automatically install updates' from windows. Has anyone managed to get in contact with microsoft and find out which update is the corrupt on so we can uninstall it? My error code first occured while trying to download an update for windows explorer 7 security which was marked as 'important'. The update fails and I receive the error code 8000FFFF.... same with itunes and nokia ovi.... I have just bought an iphone and cannot use it as itunes wont download - many many many people it seems have this problem. I work during the day and it seems that the helpline is closed at 6pm?? What use is that to anyone with a job??! I there anyone who has a simple solution to this problem that doesn't involve computer programming or a complete system restore?? I am getting so frustrated and stressed by microsoft that I am seriously considering binning it and investing in an apple.... we use them in work and they give us absolutely no bother at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I found this elsewhere and it worked for me on a Windows 2008 R2 server that couldn't download Service Pack 1 or any other Windows Update. Verify that the local USERS group has at least Read access to the root of the C: drive. Mine was missing. replacing it fixed the problem. The explanation I read had something to do with LocalService and NetwrokService needing access, which seemed hokie to me since neither is a visble member of USERS, but, no complaints. It worked. For the guy who wanted the simple instrutions, double-click on "Computer" or "My Computer", right click on the C: drive and choose properties. Choose the security tab. USERS should be one of the groups with access to the root of C:. If USERS is not listed, click EDIT, ADD, from locations, choose the server you are working on, and type USERS. Make sure you check "Read & Execute", "List Folder Contents" and "Read". Then choose OK until you're out of the program. Try again on the Windows Update site. For the life of me, I can't figure out where these rights went. Servers that allow WindowsUpdate to work have them. Server that don't, do not. Even though I have all Domain rights and all local rights to the server, nothing worked until I tried this.
