windows file sharing - lots of bandwidth is consumed on ports 137, 138, 445 windows server 2008 domain
Hi there, I have been observing this for few months now on my windows server 2008 domain (all my clients are windows 7) and this is driving me crazy. On my wireless nodes the #1 bandwidth consumption is made by 'Windows file shaing' on ports 137, 138 and 445. I tried to squeeze the bandwidth on these ports on all my wireless users via wireless controller, then user complaint that even a small file like '100mb' would take hours to download. If windows 7 OS is too chatty I would rather go back to windows XP? What is the solution of my problem I need to have my users download files and at the same time be fair with my bandwidth which is making all my wireless nodes and servers work really hard. Help plz. Note: One day log: 'windows file sharing' takes about 10GB bandwidth' and sometimes '5GB'

Hello. The bandwidth usage you are seeing is users accessing files across the network as well as broadcasts for NetBIOS resolution. If you throttle the bandwidth, the results are users file access slowing down. Ports 137-193 are for NetBIOS over tcp/ip and 445 is smb. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc875824.aspx Miguel Fra | Falcon IT Services, Miami, FL www.falconitservices.com | www.falconits.com | Blog

I would be pretty worried if my users were using Netbios file sharing over the Internet. The Netbios ports are favorites with hackers. Bill
