You can also try this:

1 Run chkdsc /r /f and sfc /scannow

2 Reset Windows Update components:

This should also apply for Windows 8

3 Disable firewall and security programs.

yes it VERY VERY annoying as my machine has crashed twice and it took forever to get it to go back to the day before. I have now disabled all window updates and it is just lucky that HP has a backup to allow me to actually use my computer :( what is the point of updates if they haven't been thoroughly checked to ensure that they WORK grrrrrr
