windows 8.1 update

i have a dell laptop and windows 8.1 updated but when i tried to turn on the computer after the windows sign came up it loaded and went to a black screen. i tried system restore that didnt work, i tired almost all the options in troubleshooting, i dont have the installation disk or repair disk so thats the only thing i havent tried. the only way i can get on the computer is via safe mode. how do i fix it?

Once in safe mode open an elevated command prompt (by right-clicking CMD and running as administrator.) Once that's open type: sfc /scannow

Let is run and fix any errors then type: chkdsk /f

Post the results of those two operations here and we can take it from there.

the scan is complete but it says Chkdsk cannon run now

it then says would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts

should i restart it?

I would restart it in safe mode and run both scans from there.

Chkdsk cannot evaluate the operating system volume for errors while it is in use. You will need to press Y to confirm that you would like to check the disk at the next reboot and to reboot.

You can also uninstall the latest batch of Windows Updates from the Control Panel in Safe Mode if you suspect that the updates may have caused the error. Specifically, if any drivers were updated you may want to roll those back.

Hi additucks,

We wonder if there is any luck your issue has been resolved. if you found your own solution by yourself, we would appreciate it if you could share it with us so other users also could see it.

Besides what suggested by Brandon and Acreed, you might need a bootable disk for repair. you could download Windows 8.1 ISO for free.
