windows 7 upgrade advisor ran into an unexpected error. Please reinstall Windows 7 upgrade advisor and try again
Before purchasing my copy of Win 7 I want to run the upgrade advisor but whenever I run it I get "windows 7 upgrade advisor ran into an unexpected error. Please reinstall Windows 7 upgrade advisor and try again" This is happening in "clean boot" and safe mode start. At present I am running Vista Home premium 32 bit on a Dell Dimension 9200 having upgraded from XP

Hi, Before going any further, I would like to confirm if you tried to remove and reinstall Windows 7 upgrade advisor. You can try updating BIOS and drivers from this link. If the issue persists, try Clean Boot mode. In addition, according to the following link, Dell Dimension 9200 is not listed as a Windows 7 compatible computer. http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/document?c=us&docid=360683&l=en&s=gen#1 Given this situation, I suggest contacting Dell to confirm if this computer will work with Windows 7. Hope it helps.Vivian Xing - MSFT

I have followed the clean boot procedure and still get the same error when running Win & upgrade advisor. Have checked and my bios and all drivers are up to date The Dell 9200/XP401 is running Vista 32 SP2 and looking at all the hardware specs I do believe it is suitable for upgrade but even if it wasn't I do not see any reason that the upgrade advisor will not run.

Hi, According to my research, other Dell users also encountered the same error, you can find more information from here. It seems that some Dell configuration prevent this program running. According to the above link, some of them installed Windows 7 successfully even though the Upgrade Advisor does not work. At this time, I suggest contacting Dell to confirm if there is some specific driver updates for Windows 7, if everything is compatible, then you can purchase and upgrade to Windows 7. Hi RichardJH, are you still on Vista? If so, we'd appreciate if you sent the %TEMP%\WuaDiagnostics.log file to wuabeta@microsoft.com we can take a look at what might've caused your problem. We're aware of a few people having this issue, and having this tile will help us troubleshoot the problem.Thanks,- Richard

Richard yes I am still using Vista and despite checking and updating a few drivers where necessary I am still unable to run Windows & upgrade advisor. I have searched my PC for the .log file you mention but it is not there. I am not sure that Win7 UGA is even running long enough to write the log file. I an glad to see that I am not the only one with this problem and it does not seem limited to Dell PC's Thanks Richard JH

rich try the 90 day trail and have vista driver for the vid.if it run vista it should run win 7.i am on a 5 year old pc with win 7 x64 rc 7100,xpress 200 chitset win. 3 ghz p4 ceder mill 631 that not even surported and i have zero problems other then i cant install a ssd.the updagrade adviser told me i needed to check windows update for a vid driver and when i did it was dsod and i had to reinstall and i just used a vista driver from ati site directly.i think your best option is to google and see if someone on your hardware and just install bare and look for drivers for your other hardware after.dont do a all at once install with everything or your never know what at issue.anything thta lacks vista suport is out in the cold.the beta was hard for me as i lacked a vista driver at the time that would work with my vid i even hard xp issues with the newest driver but the whole trick seems to be getting the right drivers.driver surport is allways a problem with any new os and what makes it more of a issues is the fact they may have a driver but fail to list it on certin pages you may seach.i found this alot to be the case.
