It is possible that something's going wrong in your hardware. Do you have the Dell Diagnostics disc? Try running the suite of tests continuously overnight some night. Of course, it's possible that something you've installed (hardware or software) has changed the way the system works, but I'm here to tell you that a fully updated Windows 7 system (Ultimate x64 in my case) CAN stay up for weeks on end... Absolutely the *ONLY* reboots I've had since I installed my copy on my Dell Precision 490 workstation in January were because of software installs / Windows Updates that required reboot. -Noel

I have almost the exact model Dell Laptop that you are talking about. It came with Vista x64 installed and I reformatted it and installed Win7 x64. I have had no issues at all and it never goes down or locks up. Is this a preinstall from Dell or did you do the install yourself? I ask this because in most cases there is an order to installing the drivers/software that is suggested on the Dell site. I have always gone by these steps and never had a problem. Have you run the "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Performance Information and Tools\Advanced Tools\Generate A System Health Report? This report has a lot of information on things that might be happening. These are just some thoughts on this, what I would look at. I have been running this laptop non stop for months and haven't had any issues. Other than regular updates for different things it performs well. Don

Hi vzdan It sounds like you have ruled out just about all of the obvious components. I would recommend that you contact Dell support and let one of their technicians perform some remote diagnostics on that laptop. It could be an overheating issue, or....? They will also be aware of any known issues with that system. Here are some links for your convenience. Dell Support Home Page Dell Laptop Support Forums Hope this helps. ok i think i may have fixed it, there was one event that i saw coming up but it has come up since i loaded avg on the machine 3 months ago. just a warning about the dll's that load. narrowed it down to a program update that avg ran a few weeks back. i removed avg and cleared all of it from the registry so nothing from it is loading. have been running 11 hours now and no lock. and yes i ran the diags as a burn in and checked pc health and both came up that nothing was wrong. every diag i ran told me nothing was wrong b/c it never generated any dump log it just completely locked the system.

May I suggest Avast Pro 5.0 antivirus software in place of that AVG that you have removed. I find it completely stable on my x64 system and quite good. -Noel

ok after a burn in of over 24 hours everthing is running great. avg is what was causing it. after uninstalled it i did load avast. but to answer technocrate, there was nothing in the minidump and nothing inthe event log for the time of crash or anything leading up to it that would have flagged it as a problem. the computer would just hard lock and no explanation. and there no unknown devices, this still ahs the factory load of win 7 ultimate 64 on it from dell. after reading some other forum posts here and on grisoft's page there was mention of windows defender conflicting with avg causing similar problems. also people reviewing the event log and finding a warning generated from the dll load for avg. thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I'm not sure if anyone has come across this issue lately, but I am having the same issue right now. Dell Optiplex loaded with Windows 7 64-bit. AVG 2011 is currently installed, but the computer locks up no matter what. I have thoroughly tested everything else on this PC and I know that it is the AVG causing the lockups. If I stop the service, it does not hang, but once AVG is opened and begins running, it hangs again. Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated!
