windows 7 to access data on mac os shares
I am currently working inside a mixed Windows XP / Vista / Mac OS X network with with some data provided on the mac as shares available for the other PCs. When I tried to integrate Windows 7 into that environment, I failed. It is no problem to access the mac via the other Windows PCs, and it is no problem to access the other Windows PCs with Windows 7. But no matter what I tried, I haven't been able to access the shares on the OS X. I tried the measures already necessary for VISTA, but no chance. Has anyone ever got that working or is that simply not possible yet?

Hi, I suggest that you try the following method to change the authentication level in Windows 7 beta. 1. Click Start, in the Start Search box enter gpedit.msc 2. Navigate to Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Local Policies->Security Options. 3. In the right pane, find "Network Security: LAN Manager Authentication Level" and double-click it. 4. Change the setting from "Send NTMLv2 response only" to "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session if negotiated" 5. Locate to Network Security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP Based (including secure RPC) Clients and double-click on it. 11. Change the setting from "require 128 bit" to unchecked (No Minimum) 12. Click OK. Hope it helps. Arthur Xie - MSFT

Thank you for your advice. It works fine as a temporary solution. However:LAN Management Authorization at "NTLMv2 only" does not affect the issue on either my Windows 7 or XP computers. The remaining problem is that now the Mac is entirely visible to these other computers, not just the public folders.(Things are ok in the other direction). If there is no encryption now either, this must make things very insecure.Dare I ask whose problem this is? Microsoft, Apple, both maybe? What needs to be done?

Hi, The issue of the network between MAC and Windows 7 beta or Windows Vista is authentication issue. Because the authentication levels are different, the network communications are blocked. This is the only solution to resolve this issue. In general situations all Windows computers on a network will be visible on any Windows computer. As we have changed the authentication, the MAC computer is also displayed. This is a nature behavior. Although the computer is visible, users from network do not have permissions to make any changes on the computer unless you have configured to trust them. Arthur Xie - MSFT
