windows 7 remote desktop stopped working after installing June patches
I use Windows 7 ultimate on a laptop as a remote desktop client to windows vista ultimate on a desktop machine. Before installing the June microsoft patches there were no problems, the connection worked 100% reliably (on a wireless/wired LAN). After installing June patches for Win 7 ActiveX Killbits and some Office 2007 security patches, the remote desktop was no longer working reliably. After I restart the Win 7 laptop client, it will work once or twice, and then after that the remote desktop startup takes a long time and eventually times out saying it can't see the remote computer. At the same time, I also installed the June patches on the vista machine. It won't work again until I restart the client. I have not had to restart the vista desktop that I am connecting to remotely. Please advise

I am using Windows 7 ultimate on my desktop and I connect to my office VPN, when I open the remote desktop connection and enter the server name/IP Address it takes a long time and says This computer can't connect to the remote computer. When I use Windows XP from my laptop and connect to the VPN, I can get in on to any server w/o any issues. I have tried disabling the windows firewall Norton Antivirus but no luck :( Any help is highly appreciated.. Thanks in Advance, Sachin

Hi, Is there any error message when trying to access the remote Windows Vista machine? To troubleshoot the issue, please perform the following steps. 1. Temporarily disable firewall on each machine and access the network machine again. 2. Restart the Windows 7 machine in Safe Mode with Networking for a test. If it can work fine, please restart the machine and perform a Clean Boot to check the result. 3. Upgrade the NIC driver to the latest one. 4. Perform a System Restore before the problem pops up. Thanks, Novak

Hi Novak, Thanks for responding quickly. Here are answers to your questions: When the connection fails, I receive the following error on the Windows 7 client, in a dialog box titled Remote Desktop Connection: <Big Red X in Circle> "Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons: 1) Remote access to the server is not enabled 2) The remote computer is turned off 3) The remote computer is not available on the network Make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled." But this message doesn't seem to make sense. Nothing has changed with the remote vista machine. The win 7 client was able to connect after it restarted, but then a subsequent attempt stopped working. I am having no network issues. The problem really seems to focus on something in the windows 7 client that works after the machine was restarted, and then stops working after a couple of successful attemps. Future attempts will never work on the win 7 client until it is restarted. Now as to your suggestions... Suggestion 1: Turn off windows firewall(s). I tried this, first only turning off the firewall on the local client, and then on both machines. This makes no difference, the remote desktop connection attempt still fails with the same message documented above. Suggestion 2: I will work on this and get back to you. Suggestion 3: The latest drivers were already installed. Suggestion 4: Perhaps I should roll back the June patches and confirm that the problem disappears, and then reinstall them one at a time. Thanks.

I have exactly the same problem on both Vista and Windows 7 machines. One located in UK and the other in Macau. Last weeks update effectively threw me out of the house with the keys locked inside. The update reset the Firewall exclusions so I have had to retick that box - that is not updating it is meddling. I can now access both machines remotely from within the home network. But genuine remote access using DynDns or No-Ip produces the message quoted above. Both machines are updated with the Host Both machines when tested back show Port 3389 and 3389:80 is open The routers are correctly configured. This update should have carried a very clear warning. Web searching the topic is showing that the problem is widespread. What is the setting that has been changed?
