windows 7 premium sharing 'public' subdirectories not accessible by win xp after a while
this is a private smb network : 2 (older) win xp pro machines 2 win 7-64 premium 1 win 7-64 pro one of the win7 premium shares an access database all machines can see & access the share after a while (1/2 day) the win xp machines cannot access the shared data on the win7 any more the win xp machines do use the database very regularly throughout the day that solution did work for years, when the database was running on bosse's win xp machine the problem just arises now with a migration to a new (win7) pc the win7 pro had no access problem but does not have to access that database (other job) the win7 premium machines have 4gb ram, an i3 processor (first generation) and are used for 'office applications' they hardly go above 2gb of ram the win7 pro has an i5 and is needed for cad 2d & 3d calculation, so i do not want to switch machines using wireshark to sniff netbios answers, i saw the win7 premium respond an "out of memory" to the netbios request of a win xp machine rebooting the win 7 restored the connectivity are they some limits or difference in the netbios stack of win 7 between an home (premium) and a pro ? (as they where in xp) is there some ways to refresh the netbios or network stack of the win 7 machine ? with or without loosing connectivity ? (i do not want to corrupt the database) +++++++++++++++++++++++ i would appreciate any feed-backs, comments or approach to a solution (even a stable work-around) thank you as this i a working environment and not some lab, a quick, stable & cheap fix would be appreciate (beside suicide & 'quit the job') i thought of following possible solutions (if viable) : would upgrade from premium to pro correct the problem ? as the difference is very small, i might be tempted to take the 'ultimate' buying a fast nas (600€ + 150€ for 2 fast hd) might help but that is more expensive or turning one old pc into a nas (new power supply, new disks) might be cost effective solution ------------------- i did post it there answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/windows-7-premium-sharing-public-subdirectories/939ead89-cf68-4798-aec0-ce877dabe79b but a moderator asked / adviced to post here as this is a more technical forum

Hi, You can refresh NetBIOS via: nbtstat –RR More detail you can refer this article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc784285(WS.10).aspx Furthermore, in order to troubleshoot the issue, you can perform these tests: 1 Enable NetBIOS on Windows 7 machines. 2 Temporally disable firewall on Windows 7. 3 Clear credential manager and recreate it in Windows 7. 4 Map the share folder on Windows 7 for test. In addition, please share me the error message when the issue occurs. Thanks Leo, i will do ... as soon as the error comes again (i regret not having saved the sniffer session) the other day was a 'billing day', with a lot of accesses to that database the activity is much quieter now i am pretty sure there is a difference in the number of concurrent connections between home (=premium) and pro i remembered many years ago, with a software vpn gateway (shiva), it had to run on xp-pro as the connection number only increased by a small number, while the home did increase by a much bigger number, resulting the home was running out of number quite rapidly. it might be something similar other options (out of discussion) moving the database to a 'real' server (w2k3 / 2k8, linux or even a mid-high nas) would be better even moving to a sql but i do not have the budget, nor the time to modify the database (not written by me)
