windows 7 network exploring problem
Hello everybody. I'm new to this forum and this is my first post. I have this problem for a long time . When one IP is specified e.g. 192.168.1.166 mask 255.255.255.0 I can see network computers and their netbios names. But in our company my IP is 192.168.0.166 255.255.255.0 for intranet and 10.0.10.40 255.255.255.224 for internet access. My problem is when I specify second IP (10.0.10.40 255.255.255.224 gateway 10.0.10.49) I cannot any longer see computers in my network. The only way I can enter computer in network is to enter IP (e.g. \\192.168.1.165) or disable the second IP. There is one more thing. When only one IP is specified after computer restarts (192.168.1.166) and then I add second ip (10.0.10.40) everything works allright till the system restarts. In Windows XP everything worked OK. Problem is only in Windows 7. I think it's routing table problem but i'm not sure. I'll be very happy if somebody could help. Hi Eirik, I've tried to change the routes but after completing these commands interface persist 10.0.10.40. Should I add something else to route command.? When I add computer to LMHOSTS file everything works fine. But I think it must be someway to do this without LMHOSTS file -- just like in windows XP . ... Anybody ? Is this normal that computer running Windows 7 is not visible in network neighborhood, but other people could enter my computer typing \\MyComputerName,

When you use the ip 192.168.1.166 you are going to use the wins service as name resolution for workstation you try to connect to, since the wins server has an ip in the same network (192.168.1.200). When you swith on the other network your ip belongs to a different broadcast domain (10.0.10.40) so the wins queries no longer reaches the wins server and you should be able to reach workstations by using netbios over tcp. I see it's enabled on your workstation, that's good. At this point I suspect you have issue with name resolution, since the lmhosts is being used by your workstation before querying the dns server, so it works and there is not roouting issue then. Also it works if you use ip addresses (you said in the first post). Since the dns server is on an external network, is it capable of resolving internal host names ? (If not, you might need to add another zone on that server and use conditional forwarding) Please try to point the troubleshooting in that direction (dns) and let us know how it goes.Vincenzo MCTS, MCTIP Server 2008 | MCTS Exchange 2010 | WatchGuard Firewall Security Professional

Hi, You're right about WINS server. In server wins database my computer is visible as 10.0.10.40 not 192.168.1.166. Maybe that is the problem. Can I change that ? DNS is not capable of resolving internal host names. I cannot do anything with DNS server. It's external server @ internet provider. I have no other ideas what to do with it.
