windows 7 losing internet connection
i know this issue has been covered before, and i am not a computer geek, have a windows 7 os with d link dgl 4100 router after replacing my link sys because my internet connection kept going down. running windows firewall and have all the updated drivers for my ethernet card and the d link is the latest version. i use a ppoe through my isp and they have verified that they have no problem. about every 30 mins my internet goes down and i either have to power down the router and bring it back up or shut down the computer and bring that back up before the internet connection is restored. i don't know what else to do and and as a last resort will roll my os back to vista. thanks for any response/help anyone can give me.

Since you mention you're using pppoe through your isp, did you ensure is input correcty under router config page? Is there any third party firewall other than windows firewall?

Have you check with dlink support whether is there any stable firmware which you could either downgrade or upgrade? Btw which version of router firmware you're having? Try swapping to another ethernet port and see how it goes Lastly you're not running any P2P i assume?? And the router is on dhcp or static?

Ok, does your internet connection get disrupted only when you're gaming or as and when you access the net? Though you did mention you did verify with your isp that everything is set up properly but to be on the safe side, i'll link the step as how to acess and configure the pppoe wan mode, just incase you left out something, following are the link and you might wanna consider changing the reconnect mode feature from on demand to always on http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v174/olivero/pppoe.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v174/olivero/ppoe.jpg Note: make sure the above wan mode as in pppoe is checked, follow by adding dns, primary and secondary dns server If using pppoe option, you will need to remove any pppoe client software from your computers Btw have you try accessing the net directly through the modem and bypassing the router for the time being and see how it goes? What i mean of swapping ethernet ports is to swap the ethernet cable say currently is attach to the router port 1, swap it to port 2, 3 and vice versa From your first post you mention you're running vista previously, so does this problem occurs when you're with vista

it does not matter what i do, whether or not i am on line after about 30 mins the internet connection goes down and i have to reboot the router. have not yet tried to by pass router, will try that next.

did not have any problem under win vista, tried setting idle time to zero, did not work, will try the always on and see if that works. It seem to me there's some compatible issue between the router and win 7, try running win 7 upgrade advisor

the d link router i have is a replacement for the link sys router that i used to have and the link sys had the same problem. will double check w7 upgrade again, but now have the router set to internet connection always on and will see if that lasts past 30 min.

the only program that is close to my problem is the microsoft.net framework 1.1 which the upgrade advisor sys is not compatible. i have no idea if this program is related to my problem.

leaving the router connection to always on does not work. Hmm, just a thought, is this a laptop or desktop pc? You're running windows 7 32 or 64bit OS? Are you running any other wireless client as in usb or wireless lan? Did you verify all device is detected under device manager? And is this a fresh install or upgrade version of win 7? Oh ya, between have you try connecting directly to the modem and bypass the router for the time being and see how it goes?
April 26th, 2010 9:43am

this is a desk top running win 7 32 bit with just a wired router, all devices are seen under device manager and this is a fresh install from vista to win 7 which by the way was done about the end of jan beginning of feb and the problem has been like this for only about the last 2 weeks. however let me note that since the time of install there would be ocasions when i would lose my internet connection and would have to reboot the router. maybe once a week to once every couple of weeks. have not yet tried connecting to the internet directly yet.

have a windows 7 os with d link dgl 4100 router after replacing my link sys because my internet connection kept going down. It seem the problem occurs when u're having linksys router as well as after you change to a dlink. As i menion earlier on, connect directly to the modem and bypassing the router for the time being and see how it goes

maybe so but was using the linksys router under vista without any problems

To eliminate the cause, please try Daniel’s suggestion to bypass the router and connect the DSL modem directly for a test. Does Internet disconnect automatically now? Also, please upgrade the router’s firmware and NIC driver. Thanks, Novak

all the drivers for the nic and router are up to date. the only thing i did yesterday was to up date the micrsoft.net framework 1.1 which win7 upgrade advisor said was in compatible.several hours later the internet connection stopped dropping out and so far has been working ok. will keep an eye on for at least the next 24 hrs or so to ensure that it will stay operational. i do not know what if anything the net framework might have had to do with my problem or what it is or does.

As this is not the first time you covering this issue judging from your first post. And we have try all means guiding you but still fail. Have you try seeking help from dlink support? Check with them whether is there a version 1.8 or 1.9 firmware? I believe they would be obliged to help, come to worse maybe they could change to another router for you
April 28th, 2010 2:43am

the firmware for my d link router is version 1.7 and that is the latest version, it's not a router problem since i had the same problem with my link sys router as well, reference my last post since properly upgrading my net framework, i.e. downloading new version(4) deleting old version(1.1) and then installing version 4, this was all done about 7 hrs ago, i have not had a single problem since then. the mistake i made yesterday was not uninstalling ver 1.1 before installing ver 4. so we will see over the next 2 to 3 days if this indeed solves the problem.
