windows 7 logon failure accessing one pc on network
I was directed to this forum from a moderator in the security, privacy and user accounts forum. I have three windows 7 64 dell pc's on a wireless network. One of the pc's will not allow the other two to connect always giving the "Logon Failure: unknown user name or bad password. All three pc's are members of the same homegroup. None of the pc's have passwords. Two of the pc's share files and printers with all three pc's without a problem. The third pc shows up as in the Homegroup but always gives the Logon Failure message. At this point the pc with the problem has only a single account besides a disabled guest account. The homegroup settings have all check boxes checked sharing all libraries and printers. Under advanced settings, network discovery is on, file and printer sharing is on, public folder sharing is on, file sharing connections is set to use 128 bit encryption, password protected sharing is turned off, homegroup connections is set to allow windows to manage homegroup connections. I have this for both the home and public profile. I have shared the c drive to everyone, all priveledges. I have turned off windows firewall and my anti-virus software. What am I missing? Seems like everyone in the universe should be able to get to my files at this point.

Hi javary, Thanks for the post! Based on those methods you’ve tried, I suggest you check the local group policy settings. Open the Local Group Policy Editor (Click Start, input gpedit.msc in the search box, press Enter key) In the left pane, locate to Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Options In the right pane, enable these policies: Network access: Allow anonymous SID/name translation Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users Disable these policies: Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares Regards, MiyaThis posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. | Please remember to click "Mark as Answer" on the post that helps you, and to click "Unmark as Answer" if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Thank you, Miya. I have w7 home premium and it appears it doesn't have gpedit.msc. Do you know the registry entries to check? jfa

I finally found the answer. I tried everything including reloading windows 7 from scratch. I still had the same error. Finally I noticed that on a different pc, when i went to map printers, the printers were listed as belonging to the wrong pc! The cannon that is on the pc that was not working actually was showing up under the pc in the other room! I went into the router (UVERSE) and saw it's ip mapping (i do dhcp letting it assign ip's) was all weirded out with more entries than i have devices. I turned off all the pcs, cleared the router ip mapping cache, then rebooted the router just in case. When i turned on all the pc's, no more problems. The problem was with the router, not the pc. jfa
