windows 7 internet explorer 8 activex
Issue: I just installed windows 7 ultimate and it uses ie8 by default. After I setup the network, I checked to see that it could access security cameras at a particular site. It did at least until the system downloaded and installed the first batch of updates. After this, ie8 attempts to load the activex files that are necessary to view the security cameras and then freezes displaying a white screen overlay. The site that this system must access is: http://menelaos.dynalias.com/ Actions taken: 1. Click "Start", type "inetcpl.cpl" (without quotation marks) into “Search” bar and press "Enter" to open the “Internet Options” window. 2. Switch to the "Advanced" tab. 3. Click "Reset…" to reset Internet Explorer settings. 4. Check "Delete personal settings" box and click "Reset" to confirm the operation. 5. Click "Close" when the resetting process is complete. 6. Close the Internet Explorer window and restart IE to check the issue. Result: This did not allow the activex to work. I then removed updates: kb980195 kb2360131 kb2158563 kb2388210 kb2362765 clean the system files and restarted ie8, but this did not solve the problem. Additonal changes: I also set the above link into the security trusted sites. I have also modified the security internet zone settings: download unsigned activex controls to prompt. initialize and script activex controls not marked as safe to prompt. I now believe that one of the windows 7 updates must be the problem. Can someone try the link above and/or tell me which of the updates is causing this problem? Peter

Peter, I think i could reproduce and solve your problem. The ActiveX that the webpage tries to install is not signed. And out of the box internet explorer blocks the installation of non signed activeX's. So you need to confiure the option Download unsigned ActiveX Control to Prompt instead of disabled. This article show how you can set this setting in IE6. (but this still applies to IE 7 & 8) http://www.officeocx.com/ActiveX_Help.htm Kind Regards DFTIM me - TWiTTer: @DFTER

daft, Thanks for the reply but unfortunately I already have that set. The problem must be in one of the windows 7 updates as I have uninstalled the internet explorer 8 updates and it still does not work. Forgot to mention that I added the site to the trusted sites and that protected mode is off but it still does not work. Peter

Peter, Do you recieve an error message? Some other test that you can perform... Test if there are killbits that block your activeX. 1. Try to close all IE windows. 2. Rename the registery key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility.old 3. Open internet explorer and try to reproduce the problem. 4.Then rename the following registery keys back HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility.old to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility UAC Try to disable UAC Keep me updated if one of the sollutions work for you or not. DFT, After doing step 2, running ie8, I am seeing a notice by activex: "depending on the internet bandwidth, it might take a few minutes to download the software" then it just stops there. The main difference this time is that IE8 did not freeze. I could click on it and it would respond allowing me to close it. UAC is disabled from the beginning. After doing step 4, running ie8, calling the link, ie8 freezes with a white block in the center. Task manager is then required to end ie8. Regards, Peter

This is still an issue that has not been solved even after getting the latest updates.
