windows 7 dns suffix append issue
We have two suffixes that are appended to (I always assumed) non-dotted lookups.
test1.com
test1.local.com
However recently when I do a lookup, the lookup is appending these suffixes even if I use a dotted name. So looking up www.google.com results in:
"Standard Query A www.google.com.test1.com"
"Standard Query Response, No such name"
"Stadard Query AAAA www.google.com.test1.com"
"Standard Query Response, No such name"
"Standard Query A www.google.com.test1.local.com"
"Standard Query Reponse, No such name"
"Standard Query AAAA www.google.com.test1.local.com"
"Standard Query Response, No such name"
"Standard Query A www.google.com"
phew it finally gets it right. But sometimes I get timeouts because of how long it takes.... How do I prevent the appending from happening? It shouldn't with dotted names, right????
The computer is not connected to a domain.
Thanks!

Your assumption is correct. Refer to this MS article:
Configuring DNS client settings
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc778792(WS.10).aspx
Domain name suffix searches are used only when a DNS name entry is
not fully qualified. To fully qualify a DNS name, a trailing period (.) is entered at the end of the name.
I am not familiar with this issue at the moment. I am interested so I'll be researching this. Hopefully someone else has encountered this problem.
