Have windows 7 previously connected to a domain. That domain no longer exists - I want to be able to log on and change settings without the restrictions of the previous domain. Have tried to change via my computer/properties/computername/change. It comes up with this computer is connected to a domain. Can I change it somehow to a workgroup. I have looked at similiar questions but the answer is not there.

The easiest way to do this is to join it to a new, existing Domain somewhere, wait for the Group policies to refresh so the new Domain's policies overwrite the old ones, then remove it from the new Domain. The fact that the old Domain no longer exists is irrelevant since it won't keep you from joining the machine to a new Domain. If you don't have a Domain available to join it to then remove it from your only real option is to reinstall Windows.
