evening all, i'm running windows 7 evaluation copy build 7100. i've just tried setting up a backup to my external hdd but encountered an error. the error code is 0X8007007B: "the filename directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect". the backup was only for certain folders within the system, which i selected manually. the ext hdd is partitioned into 2 and i have tried it on both of the partitions without success. if anyone can shed some light on this issue i would be much obliged! many thanks

Hi, I suggest you transfer out all the data from the external hard disk and reformat it before backing up to this external hard disk. If you still cannot backup to this external hard disk, please test if you can backup to the local hard disk. If you totally cannot backup on both hard disks, here are two suggestions can be performed. Suggestion 1: Verify the VSS service ======================== 1. Click “Start”, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Search bar and press Enter. Note: If UAC (User Account Control) window is prompted for permission to continue, please click “Continue”. 2. Double click “Volume Shadow Copy Service” and switch to “General” tab. 3. Change the “Startup type” to “Automatic” and click “Apply”. 4. Click “Start” and click “OK”. Suggestion 2: Test the issue in Clean Boot. What’s the result? If the issue persists, I suggest you upload the System Information to SkyDrive with the download link for our analyzing. How to collect the System Information ======================== 1. Press Start, type in msinfo32 in the Start Search bar and then press Enter. 2. Choose Save from the File menu and save it as an NFO file. 3. Arthur, many thanks for your suggestions! firstly i should just point out that i CAN successfully backup to the same external hdd using vista (not sure if that makes any difference). i went through the steps you mentioned - though i'm not really in a position to format the external drive unfortunately so couldn't do that. also, i wasn't able to select any internal drives in the backup programme and so couldn't try backing up to there. (i have one actual drive, with a win7 partition and a vista partition) so i tried the vss thing and the clean boot but still no success. if you get chance, i've put the system info up onto here http://tinyurl.com/ylqzsuc thanks once again.

Hi, What about Flavius Zenos suggestion? I think you had better install Windows 7 RTM, which is improved and stable. Currently, I suggest you temporarily uninstall Windows 7 Manager and create a new user account to check the issue. You may also perform a test to backup only one file and check if it works.Arthur Li - MSFT

I have the OP's same problem, but with the W7 64-bit RTM version. It was a clean OS install, with no other OSs or fancy boot issues. I cannot get Backup to complete, and it always results in error 0x8007007B So far, no forum thread that I have found has had useful advice, unfortunately.
