windows 7 APIPA network device discovery
I have Windows 7 Home and am trying to have the PC "discover" a device with an IP address in the 169.254.0.0 network. The PC has 1 ethernet port, that is currently on the 192.168.0.0 network. How do I configure this PC to see the 169.254.x.x device without disconnecting it from the 192.168.x.x network? This used to be possible with winXP. Just to be clear: I would like to be able to communicate with devices on both the 192.168 and 169.254 networks at the same time; how do I do this? I've tried setting the 'Alternate Config' tab to IP = 169.254.123.124 (the other device has a different IP address on the same network; both have subnet mask 255.255.0.0), without a default gateway or any DNS info (left those blank). Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi, Base on my searched, it’s quite hard to realize that in Windows 7. If you want to change between two difference network, for example, you want to use 192.168.0.0 network, you can try to set the IP address in “Alternate Config” 192.168.x.x also set default gateway. Then, when you want use 169.254.0.0 network, you can change the “Akterbate Config” to 169.254.X.X. There is a similar thread maybe helpful to you: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverNIS/thread/b1a46bd1-6a2c-4b6d-a030-9fba3858304b Hope it helps. Leo, Thanks for your suggestion, but that's not quite what I'm looking for: your reply suggests switching between networks (being on only one network at a time); I'm trying to find out how to do what Apple does with its 'bonjour' service and copy that in Windows 7 (it "automatically" works in WinXP), namely, that you can be one one network and at the same time also detect any devices (on your network) that are using the 169.254.x.x APIPA addressing; what do I need to do on my Win7 Home PC to achieve that?

Hi, I checked on Windows 7 Compatibility Center, I found there is no information about Apple Bonjour, you can check it on: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Search.aspx?type=Software&s=Bonjour%20for%20Windows I would suggest to run the Apple Bonjour in Vista compatibility mode for test: Here are the steps 1. Right click on the icon for the program 2. Click on properties 3. Now click on compatibility TAB 4. Under compatibility section, put a check mark on “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” 5. In the drop down box select windows vista 6. You can see Input settings section 7. Under Input settings section, put a check mark on “ Turn off advanced text services for this program’ 8. Click on “Apply” 9. Click on “OK” Then turn on “Bonjour” service on Windows 7. Hello Leo, Thanks for all your efforts. I am not trying to run Apple's bonjour service on Win7; that already works. I used bonjour as an example for what I'm trying to accomplish using Windows 7 Home only. I've already tried the alternate config tab settings, but there is still something missing to make this work. If I am on the 192.168.0.0 network, how do I detect devices using 169.254.0.0 addresses without having to reboot or disconnect from my current network? Thank you

Hi, Base on my research, there is impossible that within 192.168.0.0 network, then detect 169.254.0.0 network without disconnecting the cable or rebooting your PC. Thank you for your understanding.
