windows 7 64bit printer sharing
I am sharing a HP officejet 6110 printer on a Windows 7 64 bit machine with a 32 bit vista machine. When I add the printer to the vista machine it works untill I reboot. The printer is still there but under printer properties it has no ports. I think it may be a driver problem but HP says that the 32 bit driver is built into vista for the officejet 6110 any ideas. I can login in to the win 7 machine and look at folder shares but unable to print to the printer through vista. Any ideas?Chris Medina

I discovered years ago that sharing a printer connected directly to one computer is a P.I.T.A.! It was such a nightmare I just gave up and bought a second printer to connect to the other computer and swore I would never mess with anything like that again! I have my printers connected to the router, in my home, and access them as IP printers from all my computers. This eliminates virtually any and all problems related to "sharing" a printer! P.S. HP writes all the drivers for their hardware - not Microsoft. Even the drivers included with Vista and Win 7 are written by HP and if HP can't tell you why their drivers don't work I would not expect Microsoft to be able to tell you either since the drivers are not Microsoft's! Hi, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums. It is suggested to download the corresponding driver to local hard disk from HP’s official download center and manually install. Before installing the driver, I suggest you open Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features and delete the printer driver that is already installed. Then, please install the downloaded driver. Most printer driver installation program will prompt that if you would like to install a local printer or a network shard printer. Then select the correct option and finish the installation. If the driver installation program does not help in this, follow the steps below to add a shard printer. 1. Click Start, click Control Panel and double click Devices and Printers. 2. Click Add a Printer. 3. Select "Add a local printer". 4. Select "Create a new port". Choose "Local Port" as the type of the port. 5. In the box "Enter a port name", type the address as the following format. \\[IP address of the host computer]\[The Share Name of the printer] Then click Next. 6. Follow the instruction to finish the installation. During installing, choose the correct driver in the driver list. Best Regards Magon Liu TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. I am still having a problem. I did exactly what you told me to do. Here is the problem I have now. I have to log on to the desktop(Win7 64) through the laptop(Vista 32) to print. If I dont log on to the desktop, the printer says it's ready but when I print to it I get an error. If I go to network sharing and log on to the Win7 PC(desktop) then I can print from the laptop. Just so you know the win7 desktop has the HP 6100 printer shared cat 5 to router and the Vista Laptop is wireless. I can access shares just fine just not the printer.I should not have to logon to another computer to use a network share. Any other ideas? Chris Medina

Hi Chris, Thank you for update. Can you tell us the exact error you received? I noticed that you mention the network print works until a reboot is committed. If it is true, the network printer driver should work. The issue could be caused due to confict with certain security software running at start up. If I misunderstood, please feel free to correct me. If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, Kaspersky I.S., make sure "file and printer sharing" is enabled in THEIR firewall (or LAN allowed, depending on how their Exceptions are worded in their Firewall) You can also try clean boot in case other third party startup item interfer with the printer settings. Clean Boot prevents software conflicts by preventing the startup items and non Microsoft services from loading. This way you can safely follow the process of elimination to check which application is causing this behavior. Refer: How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 Note: Ensure that you put your computer back to normal startup mode after completing the troubleshooting steps. Steps are available in the article given above. Disabled the 3rd party norton internet security. Still have problems. I turned off password sharing on the win 7 machine. If I use the laptop and go to netwotk and logon to the share it works fine. The problem is it should work without having to logon to the shared printer. I should just be able to print to the shared printer. I did create a local port then went to\\pc name \shared printer name and loaded new drivers on the vista machine. Worked fine the first time then rebooted it doesn't work. I just would like to figure out what is wrong. Thanks for any input.will try a clean boot. Just wondering if you can tell me why it works when I logon and sometimes works when just try to use the share. Chris Medina

Hi, Thank you for your update again! Based on the description, I have two suggestions: 1. Make sure both computers are within the same workgroup. 2. Set a static IP on the host computer which is the Win 7 machine. Please try the above to check the result.
