I had the same problem recently and i fixed the issue i had about 12 important updates that would not install succesfully, it failed and reverted back top it original status. I did the basic troubleshooting first such as running the MS fix , restoring the OS and reparing the HD with no success. So i decided to run each individual update and all succeded but one...One update kept hanging and hanging. so i went to safe mode and did last know good conf to stop the update becuase i couldnt get to my desktop and then went to MS download center with a copy of the KB number and installed the update successfully...everything now working great...it seemed that one update had corrupted drivers therefore reverting all the updates back to its original state. hope this helps.
