win 7 network issue
I have loaded win 7 RC 32 bit on my new intel quad core pc with intel DG45ID motherboard. I assembled the machine at work & while installation set the network to public & accesed the internet by broadband PPPOE connection. No problems thereNow i have bought the PC home & connected to a DSL cable connection. No user name or password or IP addresss has to be entered to access internet. However win 7 labels my network as unidentified, & public network & doesnt allow me to change it to home network. Network diagnostics just tells me to shut down & restart the router. It also mentions that the router is not assigning it a valid IP address. The broadband company says that there is nothing wrong with their router.please help

So you moved from PPPOE to open broadband. Interesting. Any other PCs at home? No issues there. Can you ping the gateway/router? Can you ping Yahoo.com's IP of 69.147.114.224? If so, then you have web access. One way to test/good place to start.Basic network stuff and certainly am not trying to be rude or insulting. Assuming you ran IPCONFIG at a DOS/Command prompt. Is an IP address assigned via DHCP?I hard code/assign all my IP settings and have turned off DHCP. Simple but effective 'security' effort. I thought about listing approved MAC ID's but too much hassle. At least to me. Have you tried assigning IP and DNS entries and seeing if you can get to the web that way? Some thoughts. Looking forward to seeing if you can resolve this. Thanks.Isn't Win7 great? My 2nd round (now on RC 7100) and so impressed with it.

Hi, Thank you for posting. In addition, please also try upgrading the router firmware and see how it works. If the issue persists, please just run ipconfig /all in an elevated command prompt and post the results to this thread for our further research. Hope this helps. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT

But most likely lies with the router since you mention you're using one. All you need to do is logged into the router config page and ensure that pppoe option is not set and enable and choose dhcp instead so that the router would automatically assign an IP to you. If still no go try connecting directly to the modem and see how it goes. Btw if the pppoe is not in use, u might wanna consider remove it in windows just incase it causes conflict
