win7 fax and scan - dealing with the 'Pending' status
I'm running Windows 7 Professional, SP1, on HP Pavilion dv7. I have a Verizon USB wireless modem, model 760. I use that when I have no wifi access, and it works fine to connect to the Internet. I'm trying to use it with the Win7 Fax and Scan application. Whenever I send a fax, it stalls in the 'Pending' status. As far as I know, the drivers are up to date. What is strange is, if I restart my pc, with the modem still plugged in, the fax will start and complete successfully as the pc comes up. So it can perform the fax function, but not when I first select 'Send'. I saw another post somewhere that mentioned that the person's fax functioned after a restart; that's why I tried it, and it worked, but why is a restart needed? I haven't found too many specific help options. I have 'Send immediately' configured. One post mentioned unchecking an option that disables the Administrator account (I'm logged in to my pc as an administrator). I've checked the Win7 Services and they appear to be ok. The Fax service is typically off, but after I select to send, it starts up automatically. Is this a Win7 issue? Has anyone experienced the same issue and resolved it? Please point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance for your help. Tom

I'm not sure it can be generalized, but this worked on my laptop (one test so far). To repeat: I'm running Windows 7 Professional, SP1, 64 bit on an HP Pavilion dv7. The modem is Verizon wireless modem USB760. I booted my pc and plugged the modem in. It usually wants to run VZAccess Manager.exe, but this time I did not run it. This app connects the device to the Verizon network. Without going through the connection steps, I sent a simple fax - cover page only. It began to dial immediately, then transmitted the cover letter. I had to connect to the network to be able to log into the forum and write this. Maybe the Verizon app puts the modem in a state where it can't talk to the Fax service? I'll repost this to a Verizon forum and see what happens. Next test would be to try to disconnect the modem and try another fax. I'll add those results to this post. Hope this helps someone. I don't understand what's working or failing, but wanted to share this. Regards, Tom

fwiw another test. With the modem still plugged in the usb port, I used the connections dialog to disconnect the modem. At that point, I had no internet access. I set up another fax; just a cover letter. I sent it. The modem was plugged in but disconnected from the Verizn network. I saw the Pending status for a second or two, then it went to a dialing status, then a Transmitting status, then it completed. Windows displayed a message that the fax was sent successfully. I'm not a network guy, so I have no clue what's hasppening. But it looks like by connectig the modem to the verizon network, it causes the Fax operation to freeze in the Pending status. Somehow the fax goes through when the modem is disconnected. Is fax incompatible over the Verizon network? That's what it looks like. Maybe someone else can explain the internals. But then how does fax work if the modem is not connected to the network?

one last post. I sent an email to Verizon wireless support. Here are a couple of sentences from a reply "Faxing is not supported via our cellular modems. As an alternative, you may consider using an online fax service such as those listed below" and "In regards to your additional questions, please understand that the USB760 is not designed to support faxing. As a result, we cannot provide you with any answers as to why your fax operations either freeze or sometimes appears to function." guess that's it. it sounds like, if it works, it's working by accident, some hole in the hardware or software which could be patched in a future version. sorry if this post did not belong on this forum.

We cannot be assure about the work of the Verizon modem. I suggest you try to find if there is any Windows 7 compatible driver can help on this. Also I suggest you contact the support for more information. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
