win7 can see but not log on to win2k desktop
I have a ethernet router network (no wireless) with a win7 laptop, a vista laptop, an xp laptop and a win2k desktop. From the win7 I can see and login to all the others except the win2k computer. Win7 sees it but the login name and password doesn't work. I have win7 set to work network and it is set up as suggested by many in this forum and everything works as it should. My printer is attached to the win2k machine or I wouldn't care. All other computers can see and share files and printers with the win2k. I'm sooo close to solving this issue and yet so far away. I>m sorry if this is answered elsewhere but I couldn.t find the same issue Thanks I notice that at login win7 refers to my win7 computer name as the domain name even though it is in my workgroup that has a different name. I tried to login in as a different user with my workgroupname\win7 name and then the passwork. no luck

Try turning off password protected sharing under network and sharing center>advanced sharing setting. (in win 7) Ensure there's no third party firewall on the win 2k and try mapping it using it's IP (win 2k) Lastly ensure sharing is enable in win 2k

In addition, please try the following on this Windows 7 computer: 1. Click the Start Button, type "gpedit.msc" (without quotation marks) in Search Bar and click OK. 2. In the "Group Policy" window, double click on "Windows Settings" under "Computer Configuration". 3. Double click on "Security Settings"-> "Local Policies"-> "Security Options" 4. In the right panel, double click on the "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level", please select "Send LM & NTLM Responses". 5. Click Apply and OK. 6. Reboot the computer to check the results. Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Hi! I notice that the last postdate in this thread is about a month old, so you might already have a solution to this. But I've experienced a very similar problem, but replace your windows 2000 computer with a windows server 2003 machine and you have my situation. Long story short it turns out that you cannot log on to another computer in the network from a win7 computer if the target computer's clock and date is off. Off as in a day or more. Have you checked the system date and time for your windows 2000 computer? Mine was 8 years off :D due to old and misconfigured BIOS settings. The strange thing is that my windows vista computer, and older OS, could reach the windows server 2003 machine just fine, without paying attention to it's system date. Hope this helps!Regards
