win7 File association and open with problem
Ok my overall problem and ive search the forums and nothing works. I have an issue with windows 7 ult 64. I try to associate say .torrent file with my Utorrent program and when i use the open with after downloading the file and browse to the file location for my program and try to associate it, it does not list anything in the open with programs and i cannot get them to associate together. Ive tried reinstalling redownloading even tried to restore to a way earlier date where it was ok and nothing happens. Ive tried even using other . files and different associations with different files and nothing adds to the open with and does not save the association. any help would be appreciated in this and any further info can be provided. thank you Andrew

Does the issue occur with other types of files? If not, I suggest you open regedit.exe, then open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, right-click on the branch .torrent and delete it. Then reboot, and double-click on the .torrent. You can set file association for it.Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Ive tried that and it doesnt work, and yes it does it with everything im installing, the open with or to associate something with it goes into the windows and when i choose the program click ok it comes out to the beginning and nothing is associated with it and just says windows shell common, i think thats what it is, and all thats up there is adobe and under the other files it has a few basic ones like wordpad and notepad, but even choosing them to associate to the .files it doesnt save it even when you apply and reboot and try again, just keeps everything unassociated.

Such issues occur if the Registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications is lost. You may try SFC /scannow to fix it.Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. There is a Control Panel item called Default Programs that is used to assign file extensions to default programs. Have you tried associating them there?

Here is a tutorial that demonstrates different ways to associate a program to a file type: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/9154-default-programs-associate-file-type-protocol.html I hope this helps.

Ive tried all the suggestions listed above. None of them seem to work. when i go to associate the program and browse for it. I click on it to add it to the others and it will not add into it, ive even used the search web for file and that doesnt even work. So far other then reformatting which if i do i lose alot of the unique programs i have. Is there any program that will fix this issue with the association if it is the registry thats all messed up, ive used a few different registry programs to fix the registry but even after using them it does not help and the issue is still there for not getting the files associated , even adding stuff into the registry hasnt helped at all.

From a post by Sabrina on this forum In-place Upgrade ============ 1. Start the computer. 2. Insert the Windows 7 DVD in the computer's DVD drive. 3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate: a. If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now. b. If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps: b1. Click Start, click Run, type Drive:\setup.exe, and then click OK. Note Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive. b2. Click Install now. 4. When you reach the Which type of installation to you want? screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the current operating system to Windows 7.
