win7 64 bit wireless speed issues
i read the full troubleshooting techniques in all of them, netsh, flushdns, reset the tcp/ip stack, etc. i'm a level 2 tech, so i have a little experience in this area. i have a cyberpower laptop with i7 3780 2.4ghz, 8gb ram, atheros ar9002wb-1gn wireless, win7 pro 64 bit. it shows a speedtest at 3 different sites of 3.1 mbs avg download and 1.1 mbs avg up. when i plug in a cat 5, it shows 10.1 mbs avg down and 1.7mbs up. i have a laptop, playbook, and desktop on wireless with 10.1 mbs down and 1.7 up, they are running xp pro 32 bit and win7 home 32 bit. i am investigating the possibility to flash the router, the cable company has that locked down. i sent the laptop back, they said they replaced the nic and sent it back. i don't want to send it back if it's not broke. the only event log i had i put on google and came up with no hits. here it is: Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\Atheros\Bluetooth Suite\IEPlugIn.dll".Error in manifest or policy file "C:\Program Files (x86)\Atheros\Bluetooth Suite\Microsoft.VC80.ATL\Microsoft.VC80.ATL.MANIFEST" on line 5. Component identity found in manifest does not match the identity of the component requested. Reference is Microsoft.VC80.ATL,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.4053". Definition is Microsoft.VC80.ATL,processorArchitecture="amd64",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.4053". Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis. any help is appreciated.

Hi, The wireless speed can be affected by several factors. An 802.11g laptop connected to an 802.11n router. Since the laptop show different speed at different sites, the speed can be affected by network protocol overhead, radio interference, physical obstructions on the line of sight between endpoints, and decreasing signal strength with distance. In addition, the more devices communicating on a WLAN simultaneously, the slower the network will appear. Sometimes, ISP can be a factor. Meanwhile, the event log is related to Bluetooth.Niki Han TechNet Community Support

thanx for the reply. i am leaning towards two possibilities: either the router firmware needs to be upgraded or maybe it is not compatible with 64 bit os or the wireless nic is cheap and doesn't work as well as it should. what leads me to this conclusion is the fact that the other laptop and playbook have the same speed as the wired connection sitting in the same spot. as for the multiple components causing bandwidth issues, i have only connected to the internet, or even turned on, at a time. and the router is about 6 feet directly under the couch i sit in in the basement. if interference were an issue here, it would show on the other systems. the desktop is about 20 feet further from the router with a 10.1 mbs speed as well. i need to take it to mcd's with the other laptop and compare it on their network and rule out the router, just came up with that but haven't had time to try it.

Hi, Any update on this issue? How about the result of the wireless adapt on other laptops?Niki Han TechNet Community Support

like i posted at the start of the thread, all other wireless systems get the same 10.1 mbs down and around 2 up. all in the same spot. one at a time. bandwidth is not an issue, neither is interference. it has to be the router or the wireless nic. haven't had time to take it out and test another network, but i have looked at every setting i can find on the computer. if the nic can get the speed wired, maybe there is a firmware problem with the wireless, maybe an incompatibility for a 64 bit system?
