win7 - ftp app?
Is there an FTP app in Windows 7? Looking for something basic with session control. I have apps but wondering if there was one buried in Win7.

ftp.exeIt's a console application. Here areboth of its command-lines:
C:\>ftp /?
Transfers files to and from a computer running an FTP server service(sometimes called a daemon). Ftp can be used interactively.
FTP [-v] [-d] [-i] [-n] [-g] [-s:filename] [-a] [-A] [-x:sendbuffer] [-r:recvbuffer] [-b:asyncbuffers] [-w:windowsize] [host]
-v Suppresses display of remote server responses. -n Suppresses auto-login upon initial connection. -i Turns off interactive prompting during multiple file transfers. -d Enables debugging. -g Disables filename globbing (see GLOB command). -s:filename Specifies a text file containing FTP commands; the commands will automatically run after FTP starts. -a Use any local interface when binding data connection. -A login as anonymous. -x:send sockbuf Overrides the default SO_SNDBUF size of 8192. -r:recv sockbuf Overrides the default SO_RCVBUF size of 8192. -b:async count Overrides the default async count of 3 -w:windowsize Overrides the default transfer buffer size of 65535. host Specifies the host name or IP address of the remote host to connect to.
Notes: - mget and mput commands take y/n/q for yes/no/quit. - Use Control-C to abort commands.
C:\>ftpftp> helpCommands may be abbreviated. Commands are:
! delete literal prompt send? debug ls put statusappend dir mdelete pwd traceascii disconnect mdir quit typebell get mget quote userbinary glob mkdir recv verbosebye hash mls remotehelpcd help mput renameclose lcd open rmdirftp>Ned Pyle [MSFT] - MS Enterprise Platforms Support - Beta Team

You can also use FileZilla (freeware) just in case you would like a GUI :)

Or you can always use Internet Explorer.
Putan address such asftp://ftp.microsoft.com/ in the Address Bar and hit "Go".
Unfortunately, Folder View is not available anymore for the Explorer Bar in IE8.
In previous versions of Windows, you could use windows explorer to browse ftp sites.
This doesn't seem to work. When I tried, I got a popup saying "invalid handle" or somthing.

Actually,
there is something broken in Windows 7. When I ftp thru windows explorer I get the error "the handle is invalid" - on Vista and XP I can ftp thru the explorer.

Yeah, I think I said that. But you described the problem more succinctly.
Whether this is a BUG or a "Feature" will depend on what Microsoft has to say.

Not a feature but a known bug. Use another ftp client or start ftp from the command line while waiting for a fix.

You can always use MAP NETWORK DRIVE from MY COMPUTER Then select CONNECT TO A WEBSITE TO STORE YOUR DOCUMENTS Then enter your site eg. ftp://ftp.yoursite.com Enter username etc etc. Easy as it gets. Hope it helps

Easy yes but no session control or commands so not that useful to me. I need ability to change file permissions and switch between binary and ascii. Thanks for the post though.
