why windows backup so slow?
I have a new windows 7 install on a client PC. The PC is in the domain of a server in the same office. Running for the first time a backup of selected folders to a directory on the server. Why would the backup be taking so long to run? It has been activeover 2 hours and is at 59%. 20 minutes ago it was at 58%. There is not much on the PC. It is a new install. I did select to include "c:\program files" in the backup. And I am using IE an Visual Studio while the backup runs. the current status is "creating a system image of c:" Can I get the backup to tell me more about what it is doing?thanks,

just to give you an idea of how slow the backup is running, I shutdown everything on the PC, waited 20 minutes, and the status still says 59% complete and creating a system image of C:.

Try getting a backup software. Although microsoft implemanted the backup feature it still has many issues. I use a program called Acronis True Image Home2010.It works amazing with my windows 7 x64 ultimate. For more information check out the website:http://www.acronis.com/enterprise/

Hi Steve,Thanks for using the windows backup. This behavior is not expected. Can you please let me know the backup configuration details and traces for the backup? You can mail me the *.etl files at %windir%\logs\Windows backup to Soudamini[dot]Sreepada[at]microsoft[dot]com. Please collect the traces after the backup hangs.Thanks,S.Soudamini[MSFT]--This posting is provided "AS IS" without warranties and confers no rights.

Yes, Acronis True Image Home 2010 is indeed fast. But ....it is full of problems and a lot of its users (including myself) are complaining very loud. This is a pitty, because long time ago, Acronis was excellent. I strugled for a couple of weeks with this Acronis Software. I now came to the conclusion, that I shall not dare to perform incremental backups with it. I am now looking forward to use Windows Backup for my incremental backups ...despite the slower speed of Windows Backup, despite its lack of flexibility, and despite its much narrower functionality. But, because of the narrower functionality of Windows Backup, I will probably continue to use Acronis for things that I can not do with Windows Backup.
