w7 system image backup failed with error code 0X8007002 cannot find file..
I have a Dell XPS 8500 with Windows 7 home premium 64 bits and 16 GB RAM. I am trying to backup to an external HDD (WD mypassport 500 GB) connected to USB 3.0 using windows backup function (only windows backup). The USB 3.0 is based on intel drivers. My whole C disk contains approx 110 GB data (should fit in my external HDD without problems). I have had my PC in one month and I succedded a couple of times to perform a complete backup (system image + data) to a USB3 port/HDD, but often it ends in failure. When I try to backup a system image (only system image bup), the backup fails with the error code "0X8007002 cannot find specified file" (no information about the file). I have tried several times to backup the system image but I am always getting the same error. If I backup only the "libraries" (periodic data backup) to the same external HDD, the backup is completed without problems. Therefore I am assuming that the comunication with the external HDD via USB 3 is working (despite having some USB3 initial recognition problems in general). I have run a complete backup (system image + data) to a USB2 port and it worked. It seems that there is a problem with system image backup to USB3 (intel drivers Ivy bridge on Dell XPS 8500). Why is the data backup working and why do I get this error code on system image bup (error message that implies that there is some corrupt data)? Any suggestions???

Hi Mohammed I am using Windows backup function. It seems that the problem/solution in the link that you sent to me is related to USB3 controllers with Nvidia drivers. I have Intel drivers in my USB3 controller (Ivy bridge Intel ). Furthermore, the backup of data libraries is working properly, the problem is only when I try to backup the system image (it runs for quite a while and then it interrupts with the error code). May be my problem is also caused by some USB3 problems but the solutions available in the link do not apply to intel drivers. Smol_100

Hi, Does your external HDD support USB 3.0? Do you mean that it works with no problem when you plug into the USB 2.0 port? You need to update the motherboard driver and check it again. Meanwhile, you may run "sfc /scannow" to scan and repair your system.Ivan-Liu TechNet Community Support

Hi Ivan Thanks for your support! My external HDD (WD mypassport) supports USB3 and I am always using a USB3 cable/connector. When I connect the external HDD to a USB2 port (using USB3 cable), the backup (system image +data) always works correctly. When the external HDD is connected to a USB3 port (using USB3 cable and supporting USB3), the system image backup has failed very often with the aforementioned "error code". The data backup is always working correctly. I am suspecting that I may have problems with my USB3.0 conections (intel drivers on Ivy Bridge). I have updated the intel drivers acording to the Dell home page (one update for the "Intel extensible Host controller" to version 1.0.3.214 that is handling USB3.0). I have run the sfc/scannow as you recomended and it did not detect any "integrity violations". Why is windows generating theerror code "0X8007002 cannot find specified file". If there were any corrupted system files, the system image bup should always fail. If the USB3.0 connection is shaky, the backup may fail but windows should generate some indicative error code???? I have the same issue with INTEL USB 3.0 Extensible Host controller on my MSI Notebook, I tried also the latest drivers 1.0.5.235 dated 5/21/2012, but the problem continues and cannot create System Image with Windows 7 ( x64) Backup. My external drive is a WD MyPassport SE 1TB (USB 3.0). When the error occurs the drives disconnects momentarily and then reconnects, neither Western Digital nor MSI came up with a solution yet. It seems to be a power problem on the USB 3.0 port. The same drive works fine on My Dell xps 8300 with a Renesas/NEC USB 3.0 controller, but on the XPS 8500 you have the integrated Intel USB 3.0 Extensible host controller, which is the same of the one on my MSI Notebook. The only workaround that I found so far is using an external USB 3.0 Hub with its own external power supply. The create system image fails every time with error (0x80070002) if I connect the drive directly to the PC USB 3.0 port, but it never fails if I connect the drive through the external USB 3.0 HUB. The Create system image works fine, I also tried to restore with no problem after the backup completed. Perhaps, till WD or Intel finds a solution for the bug, you can try using an external USB 3.0 Hub with external power supply, they are quite cheap. http://www.amazon.com/Syba-SY-HUB20062-SuperSpeed-Backward-Compatible/dp/B004IEALCQ Good Luck.

Having the same issue as fg2001 on a new HP desktop and a WD My Passport. Put it on a USB 2 port and system image backup works fine. Take a WD My Book with external power supply and it works fine on USB 3 port. Updated BiOS, drivers, etc. to the latest I could find and no joy. I could not fathom what the Update Readiness Tool had to do with it but, being desperate, ran it anyway. That does not help. That should be unmarked as a solution! Went into Control Panel -> Power Options -> Change Plan Settings -> Change Advanced Settings. Under USB Settings changed USB selective suspend to Disabled. You guessed it - system image backup now works!David Weston DBM Associates - The IT Department for Small Business
