volume shadow copy service (vss)
Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit OSI am getting a number of errors including the following two. The log shows these two errors repeatedly. I know neither what they mean nor how I should respond. I am hopeful that I will receive some guidance...The first error is....Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x80040154, Class not registered. Operation: Instantiating VSS server ------------------------------------------------- and the second error is.... Volume Shadow Copy Service error: A critical component required by the Volume Shadow Copy service is not registered. This might happened if an error occurred during Windows setup or during installation of a Shadow Copy provider. The error returned from CoCreateInstance on class with CLSID {e579ab5f-1cc4-44b4-bed9-de0991ff0623} and Name IVssCoordinatorEx2 is [0x80040154, Class not registered]. Operation: Instantiating VSS server

Hi, Before going any further, I would like to confirm the following information: 1. Does any error occur when you perform Backup and Restore? 2. Are you in a domain? To troubleshoot this issue, please refer to the following steps: Register Volume Shadow Copy (VSS) files ============================= 1. Click "Start", in "Start Search" item, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter. 2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window: cd /d %windir%\system32 Net stop vss Net stop swprv regsvr32 ole32.dll /s regsvr32 oleaut32.dll /s regsvr32 vss_ps.dll /s vssvc /register /s regsvr32 /i swprv.dll /s regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll /s regsvr32 es.dll /s regsvr32 stdprov.dll /s regsvr32 vssui.dll /s regsvr32 msxml.dll /s regsvr32 msxml3.dll /s regsvr32 msxml4.dll /s Net start vss Net start swpr 3. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose "Save" when you are prompted to save the file. Type "register.bat" as the file name and choose Desktop from the left panel as the location. 4. Refer to the Desktop and right click the register.bat file, then choose "Run as administrator". 5. You will see a DOS-like window processing. Reset VSS =============== 1. Click the Start Button, type "services.msc" (without quotes) in Start Search box, and press Enter. 2. Double click and then Stop the following services: a) Volume Shadow Copy Service. b) Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider. c) COM+ event system d) COM+ System Application 3. Click Start, type REGEDIT in the Start Search bar and press Enter. 4. Select Computer (the root node) in the left pane, click Export under the File menu, choose All under Export range, select Desktop in the Save in box and type backup in File Name. click Save. Please Note: The backup file is on the Desktop and named backup.reg. We can simply restore the registry by double-clicking the backup.reg file. 5. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\EventSystem\{26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216}\Subscriptions, delete the "Subscriptions" key. 6. Restart above services. Restart the computer. Vivian,Thank you for the reply.I was also having problems shutting down my laptop and decided to do a clean install of the OS.To answer your questions;I was using Backup and Restore but am uncertain whether the errors occured during the backup process. I was backing up to a WD My Book external drive. The external drive was only connected to the laptop when I wanted to perform a backup.Additionally, I am not in a domain.Should the errors recur I'll perform the recommended steps and post the results. Please let me know if my initial responses offer any insight to what may be causing the error messages.Regards,Greg

Vivian,Thank you for your clear guidance. It is very much appreciated.About a week ago I reinstalled Win7 Ultimate 64-bit. The problem continues. I execute the recommended steps twice and, as I mentioned, the errors continue.A few remarks and observations.I am not on a domain.I have not invoked or otherwise used the backup process since the OS reinstallI did execute your recommended procedure twice.I observed a few things which are perhaps normal but I wasn't sure....When I was "stopping" the four services I noticed that Volume Shadow Copy Service and MS Software Shadow Copy Providerwas set as "manual" start up. I also noticed that the latter, MS Shadow Copy Provider, was already stopped and therefore was not forced to stop per your instructions. Com+ was already stopped too. Finally, I noticed that the previously deleted"Subscriptions" folder was not recreated in the Registery after Reboot.Any advice as to how to proceed?Best Regards,Greg

Hi, Since it happens on the clean installed system it seems that it's a hardware related issue. For further troubleshooting, you can try the following steps: Check Disk =========== 1. Insert the Windows 7 DVD and reboot the computer. 2. When we are prompted to press a key to boot from the DVD, please press Enter or the space bar. 3. Click "Next" and click "Repair your computer". 4. Please highlight "Windows 7" and click "Next". 5. In the dialog box titled "System Recovery Options", click "Command Prompt" and type in the following commands. Please press the Enter key after entering the following command. CHKDSK C: /R 6. Click Y and then check if the system is able to check the hard disk. In addition, please update your BIOS and chipset to the latest version. If the issue persists, I suggest contacting the computer manufacturer to examine the hardware.Vivian Xing - MSFT
