vista RC1 networking complaints
some issues (complaints) i have with the vista RC1 networkingso far- -no separate network icons for each network connection in systray-getting to the "manage connections" window takes way too many clicks-network connection status not directlyavailable from the systray-when taking my laptop from home to work, the network doesnt properly do a /release /renew to pick up a new DHCP address

i share your complaints . i find the entire relationship with the user via the interface has beencomplicated by attempting to simplify . it's 2007, and users (like my mother) have already become adjusted to navigating in 95, 2000 and XP menu options . adding more prompts, renaming menu items, removing/hiding advanced configuration options as an attempt to simplify the enviroment now is very too late . having Vista to compete with a mac by copying it's simplified interface is not the way to go . Osx is a different beast in that you can't do much with their enviroment and closed software licensing anyway . so the only ppl who care about osx are too busy playing D&D or praising OSX to care about switching to a PC . so just drop the whole vista - ms rival please ms! here's my problem . i'm a developer and contractor, which means i'm on a different project and different enviroment daily . i'm constantly editing my network address properties, now in vista it's really annoying and time consuming . but not only are the network properties annoying to access . but the entirefamiliar system has been renamed, changed or removed . - Why was add/remove programs renamed? - Why did the Copy/Overwrite/Move prompt change to a giant billboard with far too much text? - Why does the security center "Configure how windows alerts me" disable the 3 checkboxes and combine to one? - WhyarePictures, Music andVideos notstored in My Documents anymore? Now I have to back up 4 different locations? - Why does My Documents not show up in the File Save Dialog shortcut? - File->New Folder doesn't always refresh the file list to display the new folder. You end up with "New Folder", "New Folder(1)", "New Folder(2)", etc.. for all retry attempts! - Renaming View Wireless Networks to Connect To Network is totally misleading. Many of us use that menu option to "view wireless networks", not neccessarily connecting to anything. Literally, just viewing! - File Explorer item sorting seems almost random and sometimes there is no arrow showing what field is sorted! - Network authentication is not stored when you check the checkbox. - IE and Explorer are still so tightly connected that a large website render can lock up your entire desktop! Nice work guys. - Explorer/IE gives you a right-click option to Unlock The ToolBars for re-orgnization, but there is nothing to re-organize. - File Explorer won't let me remove the menu option bar for "Organize, View, Burn, etc". I prefer a minimal window for more content realestate! - Column details are unpredictably displayed when viewing files. It's as if it thinks just because there is a .WAV file in an application folder that it must be all Media Content. - Media Rating Detail Column? Are you seroius? Do you honestly think people are going to click on a star to rate their media on their own machine? I'm tired of hiding that column everytime there is a .WAV file in a folder. - IPConfig's output. What the heck are all those Tunnel Adapters displayed for? Seroiusly, if i'm not using it then why are you showing me? Now I have to scroll with the mouse to find my ip address? My list can go on but i have work to do.it takes me 1.5 times longer in Vista then XP so i really should get cracking... You may look at all these little complaints and shrug it off and say "who cares if it's been renamed, you can find it." . That's not the issue! The issue is how long it is to findthem allat once ! That's why people are fustrated with vista. Because every single thing has been changed and it has becomeso unproductive . that's exactly it. Vista has become the most unproductive OS that i've ever used . I didn't want to switch from DOS to 95 because i can type faster then using the mouse . I've always been a shortcut typer . I use the keyboard because reaching for the mouse is REALLY annoying and time consuming . In XP, the default focus of the cursor tab in new windows are in a great place . in vista it seems almost random . different windows puts the keyboard focus onstrange unpredictable objects . All I have to say is: THANK GOD FOR VMWARE SO I CAN STILL RUN XP IN A VM TO GET MY WORK DONE.

Althougth I share most of your complaints with you, I must strongly disagree with the one above. ipconfig MUST NOT hide any information about any network interface that's present in the system. You may ask why all the tunnels are instaled in system by default, but if they are installed, then it's presence and configuration must be revealed to the administrator in charge. You may uset mouse and graphic interface if you want to know your ip address and don't want to be plagued by informations about interfaces that don't interests you. Or you may use ipconfig asking informations for one interface only instead of /allDan

Did you ever solve the problem of inconsistently displayed Column details? It's incredibly inconvenient to have a directory that's mostly Word *.doc files treated as if it were all music b/c there are a couple of wav files from dictations. Help!!

It would behoove Microsoft to add a switch to Ipconfig to view only physical connections with the ipconfig command, if it must list all connections. I could do some clever BAT programming to modify the ipconifg output, but it may be easier just to retreat to XP. By the way the ipconfig output only allows adapter filtering when relasing or renewing addresses, not when viewing. Atleast that is true for the Vista Business I am running. If anyone out there has modified the output of ipconfig with say an ipconfige.bat file, it would be too cool if you would post the code. Thanks.

I noticed that you can pipe the output to your desktop and the physical adapters are listed first.
