Ideally testing with another screen & PC will show whether this is your current monitor, or the display given out by your video card. Is this a CRT or Flatscreen monitor you are using, or even a laptop? If the line appears from the moment you power on, its probably a defective monitor or display adapter, however if it occurs only once windows is loading / at desktop, then its likely to be a problem with the current display settings ie a software problem, in this case you can try changing the resolution/frequency settings. You can also try 3rd party monitor software to test the display settings, although this will not highlight a monitor hardware fault, as in this scenario, the signal given off by the software will be ok, only the monitor does not output it properly. Sorry I forgot to say , have a HP laptop Pavilion 17 inch screen. Line is there at bootup to shut-off..Line is located about halfway from middle on right side of screen and does not move , I did see another line about three inches high , but that line did not stay on screen when I went into a site.. Thanks jb

If the line is there at bootup, it would certainly seem to be an issue with the screen or video adapter. Can you plug another monitor into the computer to see if the line shows there as well? If so, it would seem to be something with the computer; if not, it would seem to be something with the monitor. Alternatively, consider plugging the monitor into another system, and doing a similar elimination.

Ok, if its there from the moment it gets a signal, it sounds like the screen is the cause. you can confirm this by attaching an external display (most have a VGA connector) and confirm the display is clear of the white line when you switch (some suport clone mode which is best to test) http://www.fixya.com/support/t115787-one_thick_vertical_line_showing_in_tft http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-xp/vertical-line-on-monitor/161718.html Is the laptop under warranty?

Your best bet would be to look up the manufacturers support website, and contact the regional repair number. As with any warranty claim you will need to provide proof of purchase. They will probably ask some questions to ascertain your actual problem, so have a list handy of what you have already done to diagnose the problem, this usually speeds this bit along. They will then be able to advise you of quite how you will receive a repair/replacement. You shouldn't need to have original packaging, however if they ask you to provide packaging and return it at your own expense (depeneds on warranty conditions) then you will need to make sure it is fit for shipping without damage.
