usb 2.0 ports acting like 1.1 ports in win 7 pro
so, all of a sudden, when plugging devices into my usb 2.0 hub I'm getting messages from windows 7 saying "this usb 2.0 device can perform faster if you connect it to a hi-speed usb 2.0 port..." all the ports on my mobo (asus M3A78-CM) are 2.0, as is the hub I'm using. up till about a week ago everything was fine. nothing's changed since. a few days ago this started. any ideas? what should I look for, bad drivers, etc... ...joe

This suggests your chipset driver is not working properly. I suggest checking and reinstalling chipset drivers.Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! I don't think chipset drivers have anything to do with this one.Try disconnecting the hub & powering it off/on again, then reconnect it.Then look in device manager. View devices by connection, and look for your generic USB hub. What's the name of the USB controller it shows up under? Thanks,MarkWant to know if your current hardware & software will work with Windows 7? Mark: there have been a lot of problems with the USB on various machines. I have checked into it closely and I have seen that chipset updates have helped. A BIOS update can also be helpful in rare cases.Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! Installing chipset driver packages may resolve some specific issues, but it isn't a general solution for all USB issues. Want to know if your current hardware & software will work with Windows 7? Check out these links: **Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor ** **Windows 7 Compatibility Center**

When I see USB problems, its usually the BIOS and chipset at fault. Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! Thanks for these instructions - I was struggling with the "This device can perform faster" error. On the list of things to try is "Replace the USB cable with a new one. " so I did and immediately had no problems - So try this first!

Novak, The troubleshooting you refer to is for when a USB device works unreliably or doesn't work at all. It isn't relevant to the specific error message in this thread. The basic problem here is Microsoft errors not being useful. You get the error 'this device...' Which device? It doesn't tell you. It could be a device you've plugged in but also one of half a dozen things internally. You have no way of telling. That's why terribly helpful people link to the wrong troubleshooting guide or suggest turning it off an back on again.
