There's a strong possibility that your current problems with Vista come from the fact that you don't have Service Pack 1. Strange that your OS refuses to install the SP1. What kind of errors are you getting exactly?

That error indicates that your Windows update manager doesn't work any longer. You have to get a patch from the Microsoft website... If you're unable to download and install whatever patch/update, maybe try to repair your OS with the original Vista installation disk... You also might want tot check this topic which handles the same problem you seem to have...

Most computers can be reset to factory settings during boot up.Check manual for something like pressing the f10 key while the makers logo comes up while booting.Save everything beforehand,of course.

Try In-place upgrade first. If it still does not work, as H2o_Guy said, restore the computer to factory settings and then upgrade to Windows 7: In-Place upgrade (Repair install) =========== 1. Start the computer by using the current Operating System. 2. Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive. 3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate: If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now. If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps: a. Click the Start Button, type Drive:\setup.exe in the start search box and then click OK. Note: Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive. b. Click Install now. 4. When you reach the "Which type of installation do you want?" screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the current operating system to Windows Vista.Vivian Xing - MSFT
