Even though this KB article refers to installing Service Pack 2, the troubleshooting is valid for Error 678:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892889Internet Connectivity Troubleshooting 1. Answer the First and Second Questions of Troubleshooting:First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?Be sure the computer is clean - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware 2. If nothing has changed and the computer is clean, what antivirus/security programs are you running? Have AVG 8 and/or Zone Alarm? Both these programs have had updates that caused Internet connectivity problems. I don't recommend either of these programs, but if you want to keep them check on the mftrs.' support websites.3. If #2 isn't applicable:a. Unplug the router.b. Unplug the modem. (If you have a DOCSIS 3 modem with battery backup, press the Reset button to reset the modem so the lights go off.)c. Wait 60 seconds.d. Plug in the modem (or wait until the Reset is finished) and wait until all the lights are on.e. Plug in the router and wait until all the lights are on.Do you have Internet connectivity now? If not:4. Connect your computer directly to the cable/DSL modem. Do you now have Internet connectivity? If yes, there is a problem with the router. They don't last forever. Replace it.If there is no Internet when your computer is connected directly to the cable/DSL modem, call your ISP because something is wrong with either the cable/DSL modem or your Internet service.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I thought the problem was the router, too. So I went to another router, and then another. Same problem. i can access with a wired internet connection, no problem. The "dial up and virtual private network settings" is empty, and it didn't used to be. Could that be a problem??

Are you the original poster? If you're just posting under a different name (why?) then please provide more information about your computer and the results of the malware scans referenced above. If you aren't the original poster, do you get the same error message? Please remember that we can't see your computer and you need to be descriptive.Help us help you:http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Tech_Support - See "How to Write a Post" sectionhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/555375 - How to Ask a QuestionMS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I'm not the original poster, but I began having this problem on 7/30/2010 as well. I use AVG 9 which detected a virus and quarantined it. Again, if I have a wired connection I have no problem, but cannot get pages to load wirelessly, even though the connection is strong. I thought it might be my home router, so I went to McDonalds, and had the same problem with their ATTwifi, and also back at my work. 3 different wireless routers. When I was poking around I noticed that the "dial up and virtual private network" box was empty. there had been several different items in there. I did another scan this morning and it elminated another trojan virus, but I don't know if it was related to this. Would rebuilding the Dial Up and VPN box be the key to correcting this? I tried a system restore but that didn't do anything either.BTW: I use XP Media Center

Please do as I suggested to the original poster and go through the malware scans and don't skip the preparatory work. AVG alone is inadequate to ensure your computer is clean. In addition, many variations of malware activate a proxy server. Go to Internet Options>Connections>LAN button and make sure the boxes in the proxy server section are unchecked.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
