there are no protocols installed or enabled
xp sp3 on an old dell dimension 8200I am unable to change any of the settings when going to properties on the network adapter. The connection is working fine but i have no access to any of the settings. I am logged on as admin. if i click on the advance tab i get, you must install and enable at least one protocol for this connection to work. do want to select a protocol now. if i cleck yes nothing happens. i have reinstalled the drivers and card, done a system restore. I just have no access to any of the settings.

Is there some 3rd party network management utility installed? If you create a new Windows user account with administrative priviledges, does it also have this problem?Steve Hebert - Microsoft MVP, Internet Explorer

This sounds like some group policy settings. Is this XP Professional and do you know if this machine was ever used in a business environment on a Windows domain? If so, Start, Run, gpedit.msc, OK will start the group policy editor. You will probably find some restrictions set in Computer, Administrative Templates, Network.Steve Hebert - Microsoft MVP, Internet Explorer
