what about when connecting to someone elses router?

When connecting via another router then you would have to reconfiure your TCP/IP settings for the new environment.Settings for connectin via routers differ depending on the service provider(in the case of internet) or the local administrator (in the case of a LAN) you can change these settings via network and sharing centerTunde Abagun MCP,MCSA,MCTS,MCITP en p "for the love of Computers"

Hi, It depends on if the environment has DHCP server. If so, there is no need to configure. If the new router set as Static IP address, you need to set the same configuration with other computers.
