the newest windows 7 update killed my computer 2-14-2012
I turned off my computer to do an update and now my computer will not start. it will not do a repair or even boot in safe mode. did anyone at ms check before releaseing the update or was this planned to kill off all the computers? I wasted $900 on the computer and another $80 to upgrade to the best w7

Would you happen to know what the update was? You might want to consider restoring your computer to an earlier state. Usually, most of the time these Windows updates are tested and pushed through quality to ensure they don't interfere with your normal Operating System installation and configuration. In most cases there are a series of 3rd party softwre installations that cause conflicts with the Windows Updates. Restoring your computer to an earlier state should help fix the issue. If you're unsuccessful in restoring using the method above, place your Windows 7 Media into the DVD-rom and boot to the media DVD to attempt the restore process. _JoeG Dell - Systems Integration Consultant Twitter: @8bits1byte Please remember to click "Mark as Answer" on the post that helps you, and to click "Unmark as Answer" if a marked post does not actually answer your question. there was nothing to tell me the update other than it was a ms update. The repair stsyetm will not work. the safe mode does not work either. the computer did not come with a disc from the factory so I up the creek and out all that money

Every Windows PC is supposed to come with a way of restoring the operating system. The common (cheap) way to do it is to put a hidden partition on the machine's hard drive. When you use it, it restores the machine to the state it came from the factory in. (Unfortunately, that will eliminate everyhting you've added to the machine since. It will also restore any crapware that the manufacturer wishes to.) As you don't say what make/model of PC it is, it's hard to tell you how to launch that. My cheap laptop (from 2008) also offered to write restore disks (DVDs). They serve a similar purpose. Some manufacturers will sell you restore disks, for a relatively nominal sum. You could also just buy a new copy of Windows. It's expensive (around $100 for a "system builder" copy of Home Premium), but it can be handy. Things get into more of a gray area as regards licensing, but you could copy a friend's Windows disk, and use it with your license key. (You have the sticker somewhare, I hope.) It's also supposed to be possible to modify the installer slightly (remove ei.cfg) so that the installed version is determined by the license key, not the DVD. The copy that you'd end up with would be the one that you own, but your path to get there wouldn't be the one approved by Microsoft. Good luck.

the problem is the computer will not access the backup on the hard drive. I've even tried using the recovery disks I made as backup and they won't even run or install. the darn this just freezes at "starting windows" screen and not doing a thing after that. It's been stuck like that for about 5 hours now.

I just could not let this darn thing go without more trying to reboot it and get into the windows repair. the last forced shut down and restart got the computer to load the repair tool. I don't know how long this will take or if it will even work, but I'll allow it to run overnight. If it does not finish the repair after 12 hours or so, I will take it into the shop. I've never seen the repair too work on ms systems. Anytime it's gotten to this point has always lead to tossing the computers into the trash. It's not looking good at all.

The update wreaked havoc on my HP as well; Win7 x-64. It does something to cause the host process for services to consume all resources. Windows boots, and I can log in to my profile, but that's about it. Can't click on anything, open anything. I will try to see how long it takes to open control panel so i can uninstall the update. If that doesn't work, I will revert back to last night's status just prior to the update. Then, the tedious process of installing 1 update at a time until the culprit is found. Oh joys. Thanks trillion dollar corporation for making our systems secure. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Mr Prime: It would be interesting if you and the original poster (DR Goldman) could compare notes as to what you have on your systems, the reason this would be interesting is millions upon millions got the update just fine (including my 7 machines), and yet it apparently caused very bad things to happen to you. Things like what kind of AV/Malware protection, any unusual 3rd party tools, firewalls, etc... Basically anything that can help narrow down any applications that might have caused the upgrade to fail in such a fashion. It might help others if "we" can narrow it down a bit. Thanks, DAS

May 10th, 2012 - after a Windows Update on my ASUS Windows 7 64-bit computer.... my computer will not boot. Black screen. The Geek Squad has it right now. Hardware diagnostics checked out ok. They isolated it to the Windows update. Problem - can't fix. Need a total restore where I will loose tons of valuable stuff and spend about 80 hours restoring my 1 TB hard drive. This is enough to look at Linux again or Apple.

They isolated it to the Windows update. Problem - can't fix. Need a total restore where I will loose tons of valuable stuff and spend about 80 hours restoring my 1 TB hard drive. This is enough to look at Linux again or Apple. I have 2 PC's (both ASUS) of different Brand and Age, - Game PC: ASUS Crosshair III Formula (2.5 years old) (Chipset: AMD 790FX / AMD SB750) (2100$ machine, for its time) - Web PC: (HP Pre-Config) ASUS IPIBL-LA (4.9 years old) (Chipset: Intel G33/ICH9R) (1000$ machine) Both with Windows 7, 64bit Professional. Last week my High End PC died, after installing an update. The Symptoms was: - "Black Screen" - "Power Boots on" - "PC does not load anything" - "Keyboard/mouse" don't get power. I ran a check on ALL hardware bits and found that everything was working, but the PC didn't boot. The Way I solved the High End System was buying a new CPU, and Motherboard, and all seems to work again. I thought it was old age and burned out PC parts (I use my game PC a lot ).. but then something wicked happen... my Web PC died as well... same symptoms, also after a batch of 5 (perhaps 4?) updates in the same batch.. after that... Black Screen, no power, no boot.. What concerns me is that this is only 7 days after my high-end PC died... in the same way... - I jus don't have the money to keep on upgrading with new motherboard / CPU if it continues at this rate... //T

What have I done.: I have checked the screen on my second PC. (to test that it wasn't the screen which was faulty) I have checked the mouse, keyboard on my other PC. (same as above) I have moved the ram blocks around into different slots, and removed them one by one. (to exclude them from being faulty) I've tried to run "RamOK!" on my board trying to help boot problems with RAM. (didn't do anything) I've tried to run with another graphics card (my old) are still the same result. (the error is not in the graphics) I've had all PCI card (Network and Audio) out of the machine. I've tried to remove all HDDs except the Main Drive. (should be no problem, but it is verified) I have checked all Cables, had them out, put them back in, one by one, changed them with spare cables. (didn't do anything) I've blown computers through the dust, and vacuumed the rest. (It was embarrassing clean) I have had the power off in x number of hours (and now days) with no luck. I've tried to Clear CMOS (as absolute last resort) I've tried to put a second screen (same result) I've tried to put in a Boot disc, a new HDD, an old HDD, but no result as far as I could see. //T
