switching from cable to wifi problem
Hello, We have this weird problem going on for while with windows 7 clients. We have reservation settings on the dhcp server that assigns specific ip addresses to users. dhcp server is set to assign same ip address to both ethernet and wifi adapters. When a user unplugs the cable and turns on the wifi connection the computer can not obtain ip address. When we trace the connection we see that the dhcp server doesnt receive any requests. to solve the problem we either reboot the computer or disable /enable the respective adapter. We dont encounter the same problem in windows xp clients. Its just the win7 clients. We dont want to instruct clients to disable and enable the adapter as it'd sound pretty frustrating to most of em. Any help would deeply be appreciated. Thanks

Do you use a third party utility to connect to the wireless network, or do you use the builtin utilities? Do you get an APIPA (169.x.x.x) address assigned, or does the connection just doesnt get established at all? When you run the trace utility on the client computer, do you see the DHCP requests? You can trace as following (cmd line): netsh dhcpclient trace enable trace dump That will dump you details on what happens at the DHCP level client side.

I dont use any third party utility. i do not get an APIPA. the problem is that client doesnt send a request to the DHCP. it only does once i disable the local area connection.

Strange. -Are you experiencing the problem on several hardware models? -Have you considered upgrading the driver of the wireless NIC? -By any change are you using HP laptops? If so, verify if the option to "disable wireless connections when ethernet is connected" is disabled in BIOS

thank you very much for the promt reply. i am having the same issue in all models wireless nic drivers are already up to date Yes we are running HP laptops but i dont know how to check the option you mention ? one other thing is that if the dhcp server is set to assign different ip addresses to ethernet and wifi , then everything works fine..its only if its set to assign same ip address to both ethernet and wifi.

Hi, Since you said when you reboot the computer or disable/enable the adapter, the wireless connection would work. I suspect when you directly use the wireless connection, there could be a duplicated IP address issue. Please check if there’s any related logs in your Event Viewer.
