1. Even though your hard drive is a 40GB drive, some space is taken up by formatting. In order to install an operating system (XP) so the drive can be used, it must be formatted. Think of the drive as a blank piece of paper and the formatting as drawing lines on the paper. The "lines" take up a little bit of room. In addition, see this article explaining hard drive capacity: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk_drive#Capacity_measurements 2. To manage your Startup: Start>Run>msconfig [enter] This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again". Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes. Instead, use Start>Run>services.msc [enter] and do not stop any services unless you really, really know what you're doing. If you think your computer is being remotely controlled, have a reputable local professional come on-site and check things out for you or take the machine to them and be precise in describing your computing environment at home. It will be very difficult for an end user to accurately assess whether the computer is being remotely controlled or whether it is infected or there are other factors. Do not use a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place. If you don't want to do this, back up your data to external media and do a clean install/factory restore of Windows. This is the only way you will be sure the computer is clean. 4. If you are restoring your computer to factory condition weekly, then you are definitely doing something terribly wrong. You really need a professional to take a look. This is not something that can be resolved by posting in a forum. Someone skilled must be able to look at the laptop, talk to you, examine the computing environment, etc. Safe Hex: http://www.getsafeonline.org/ https://www.mysecurecyberspace.com/ http://www.getnetwise.org/ http://www.microsoft.com/protect/default.aspx http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/staying-safe.pdf MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
