speed up a slow Windows XP tablet?
I have been having some concerns about how my Windows XP tablet performs and I got worried. It would sometimes react very slowly to input and sometimes it would seem to take much too long to log off or do a restart. Often, I would need to hit End Now on several programs like a mouse controller or my password program, that run in the background, so that it would log me off or shutdown. I was getting tired of this, so I wanted to try to fix it. Let me tell you what condition my system is in:I have just recently reinstalled Windows XP on this tablet due to a problem with the Microsoft Security Essentials. Microsoft support staff talked me into going thru all of the work that is needed to do a reinstallation. I had to update all the drivers and bring XP up to service pack 3. I had to reinstall all of my programs and update all of them. I had to import a backup copy of My Docs from a USB hard drive using Acronis True Image Home. I had to set up all of the home network junk to make it connect to the internet and print to printers through a router. Lots of stuff! Pretty overwhelming! So to fix this slowness issue, I went to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced tab, and I clicked Settings in the Performance section, and then hit the Advanced tab on that and clicked Change under Virtual Memory. It was set to System Managed Size. I have lots of space to spare, since I only use 35 GB of the 55 GB C: drive, so I wanted to try to add some more for use as RAM to try to speed things up. I clicked Custom Size and chose 6000 MB initial size and 10000 MB maximum size. This seems to have sped up my tablet for logoff and restarts. So my question is .... is there any concern about this setting? And why should it seem faster with this Custom Size than with System Managed Size? 1 person needs an answerI do too

Unless you know more about managing memory thatn XP, System Managed size is usually the best setting. If you start seeing messages that XP is increasing the size of your paging file, you may want to revisit the settings and determine if an adjustment is needed (or if there is some other issue). We cannot (or I will not) recommend any adjustment until you tell us how much RAM your system has, so who knows if the adjustments you made were a good idea, a bad idea or a waste of time.If you want another set of eyeballs of your current setupt, do this:Click Start, Run and in the box enter:msinfo32Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here. There will be some personal information (like System Name and User Name), and whatever appears to be private information to you, just delete it from the pasted information."Seems to have sped up my tablet" sounds like an emotional reaction after making performance adjustments without really being quite sure of what is going on (but you can learn more about it). I can just tell somebody I made an adjustment to their system and it should be faster now... and they will usually agree with me that things seem a lot faster, even if I have really done nothing at all. Without a little measuring, can you really be sure if the adjustments helped or not and what will you do after you get used to the new performance and then that starts to become too slow. Increase your paging file some more?Instead of just seeing if things seem faster, you can measure your startup time exactly to the fraction of a second, make an adjustment(s) and measure it again. Then you will know exactly how things are going and in what direction. For example, I can tell you that today, my system takes exactly 22.03 seconds to boot. You office is very nice. Do you have a cube for me I will be your on site computer problem go to guy.Do, or do not. There is no try.I decided to save up points for a new puppy instead of a pony!

What is the CPU and how much RAM does your computer have? Right click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get this information. Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak? Is your computer free from error? Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any from than more than 48 hours ago. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important. A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. You will see a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. This places a copy of the report into your Clipboard. Paste into the body your message. Make sure that this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Gerry - when I go to Properties on My Computer, I see on the General tab: Microsoft Windows XP, Tablet PC Edition 2005, Version 2002, Service Pack 3. Below that, I see: 1.50 GHz, 760 MB of RAM.The Task Manager is currently showing (with Outlook, Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player "Running"), Processes: 76 and CPU Usage: fluctuating 15-49%, Commit Charge: 920M / 9712M.My tablet runs without errors. I recently did a complete reinstallation of Windows XP and then all of the programs. I have run through all of the updating on Windows and all of the programs. I installed Security Essentials immediately. I have set up my tablet to work here at home on a router to share the internet and the 2 printers. Then I got my Outlook PST file imported and all of My Docs from a USB hard drive backup.I opened Event Viewer and I see only 6 items on the right (Local) side. Application, Security, System, Internet Explorer, Microsoft-Windows-Forwarding/Operational, Windows Powershell. None have any "2 pages" icons.Am I missing anything or can you tell me if I should look anywhere that I haven't mentioned here?My tablet has always run slower than most desktops. I have had several Windows XP desktops over the past few years - probably 7 or 8. I set up a network of them in a real estate brokerage that I started. I thought that it was just accepted by everyone that tablets run slower. Don't they?Jose: Thanks for jumping in and also thanks for the compliment on the office! I think that I put a lot of new info in my reply to Gerry, so I haven't done the steps that you suggested. Sorry but I don't want to get confused by going in 2 directions!

Based on your figures your tablet is to a certain extent relying on use of the pagefile. This judgement is based on the commit charge being greater than the installed RAM. There are are more precise methods of determining the extent to which the system relies on the pagefile. The point, however, is that reading and writing to the pagefile is slower than reading and writing to RAM. If you want to measure pagefile usage more accurately you can use pagefilemon.http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_pagefilemon.htmYou have two options to improve the situation. Increase the installed RAM or reduce RAM usage. What make and model is your Tablet? To reduce RAM you have a number of options.Examine the particular programmes you use and see if the are better alternatives. What anti-virus and anti-spyware programmes are you using? What browser and, more particularly Add-Ons notably Search Engines are installed. It easy to accumulate more search engines than are really needed! Adobe Acrobat Reader is a heavy user of memory and Foxit is a suitable alternative if you only use it as a reader of PDF files.Changing the way you use certain programmes from loading on startup to an on demand basis.Avoid multi-tasking unless absolutely necessary. If you use graphics programmes which employ an undo feature backup at regular intervals so that memory is released. The 2 pages" icons only appear after you have opened the erro, warning or information report. My tablet is a Motion Computing LE1600 that is just 5 or 6 years old and has barely ever been used outside my office desk. I see that they are now selling the LE1700http://www.motioncomputing.com/support/support_le1700.aspI should probably just replace it with a good desktop pc, but I have nice accessories like a good carrying case, 2 docking stations, a USB hard drive and a USB CD/DVD drive etc.I use the most current Security Essentials anti-virus. I use IE 8 with Google search and any others that had been installed have been removed.Regarding Acrobat Reader, I just noticed it getting a bunch of "upgrades" installed today. If I should consider switching to Foxit, how would I do that? Uninstall with Add/Remove and then go get Foxit somewhere?I do have several programs start at startup, like Windows Media Player, Yahoo Messenger, cCleaner and FileHippo update checker. Do you think that I should consider shutting any of those off? I'll bet you could tell me some easy way to get a list of Startup programs to tell you about.I don't think that I use any graphics programs, but who knows? And multi-tasking? I see that IE now opens several icons in the Start bar, and I swear that it used to only open in new tabs. Or maybe I am imagining that?Let me know more specifically (please), if and how I should look for those "2 pages" icons. I don't remember seeing any error, warning or info report that I could open .... but maybe it was there and I just wasn't looking in the right place.

If you uncheck you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than editing the Registry and better than using msconfig. Another useful feature of the programme is that you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information about the item selected. Does Adobe load on StartUp? http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/ Are you sure cCleaner loads on StartUp? It doesn't on my computers? I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report. Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents Folder. Open the file, and place the cursor anywhere in the file, select Edit, Select All to highlight all text and copy and paste into the body of your message. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it is more informative.Event Viewer-Copy to Clipboard. See the example at the end of Section 5 in the next link. Heck, my MAXTOR e: drive is bigger than my c:, as it is 93.4 GB and it only 31% filled up with backup!About defragmenting, I run Piriform Defraggler pretty often and it shows my C: as File System NTFS, Capacity 55.9 GB, Used 37.8 GB (68%), Fragmentation will get up to about 24% after a day or two of very limited usage. I just ran Defraggler and it took it down to 23% and then I clicked on the View Files button below iwhere it says Defrag Complete. I right clicked on the files list and the only darkened option is Save List To Text File, so I will did that and have pasted it below. That is all that is on the rest of this posting. I'm sorry, but I just noticed that you said to get a report before I run a defrag and I goofed! Oops. Let me know if I should get a report using your method instead. I use cCleaner but I cannot say I have had more than a quick look there previously. My list on my main desktop contains 9 items. I use Autoruns to control StartUp items. The list of items in cCleaner all appear in the WinLogon tab in Autoruns. The WinLogon tab is only one of a number of tabs in Autoruns. To identify what loads when you boot use Autoruns (freeware from Microsoft).http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting, or you can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than editing the Registry and better than using msconfig. Another useful feature of the programme is that you can right click an item and select Search Online to get information about the item selected. It is difficult to comment on the list of items on another computer without knowing precisely how the user works. Also invariably you encounter software you have never used, you have no idea what demand it places on computer resources in terms of CPU and memory usage and exactly how the software may be reconfigured to get the best outcome. Your startup items suggest you have software by Nuance –a version of OmniPage, which I have never used. This works with PDF files and any programme working with images can have a significant footprint. Depending on how often you use this programme, you might look at the settings within the programme to see if it might be changed to load on demand. Acronis True Image is installed. How frequently is it scheduled to backup? If weekly do you need it loading every day? Same applies to cCleaner? Do you need to run it every day? What browser are you using? In Internet Explorer you can set it to remove the history when the computer is shutdown or after so many days. You can also reduce the size of the recycle bin. These will all result in there being less for cCleaner to remove. I always run cCleaner before running Defraggler. The two go together. When I was using Outlook Express the weekly housekeeping sequence on Saturday morning was:Compact Outlook ExpresscCleanerRemove restore points (the more Options tabs in Disk CleanUp)DefragglerAcronis True ImageShopping If you intend to run full scans for malware you can use the same sequence, except you might choose not to remove restore points, if you suspect a malware infestation. Running cCleaner will noticeably reduce the time it takes to run scans for malware. A wife always thinks the husband can perform better. Fragmentation percentages in Defraggler can confuse. There are two. One refers to files and one to the drive as a whole. Thus if you defragment files in theory you can get to 0%. You can then analyse and find the drive as a whole is still fragmented. Running Defraggler (not the Quick Defrag option) for the whole drive can reduce the fragmentation to 0% but you may still have some fragmented files. There are three principal problem areas. The System Volume Information folder, the pagefile and files in use. For me files in use are AVG log files. You can reduce the impact of the System Volume Information folder by removing restore points. Creating a restore point on a newly defragmented drive and removing the old one is another way. You can eliminate fragmentation of free space caused by a fragmented pagefile by setting a minimum = maximum pagefile when there is more than about 50% free disk space. This change might be beneficial in your situation. You can take eliminating fragmentation too far <G>. Your Defraggler report seems to have failed as there seems to be nothing there. I was actually expecting a Microsoft Defragmenter report, which is better for what I was looking for, than a report from Defraggler.Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Gerry, can you please give me a little, quick "beginner" help and then maybe I can proceed with your ideas listed above? I clicked on that Autoruns.mspx link of yours and it either wants me to choose Open or Save. Not sure which to choose. I tried Open and it seems to create a file in and named C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\ASVA7Y0U\Autoruns[1].zip. It has four items in it called: autoruns.chm, autoruns.exe, autorunsc.exe & Eula.txt.Should I have used Save instead so that this would be a useable program for me in the future and not just stuck in Temporary Internet Files that will probably get cleaned out by cCleaner? Also, I am not sure what you mean when you say about cCleaner that "my main desktop contains 9 items". Do you mean that 9 are checked on the Windows tab and which 9?Lastly, it looked like when I was doing that Autoruns download, that it told me that there would be 2 things downloaded. Not sure what that was about. Was it meaning the autoruns.exe and the autorunsc.exe? If it was, I am not sure what the difference is or why I might want both.

Save. Create a folder in Programs and name it Autoruns. Extract zip file to your new folder and you will have four files:autoruns.chm -the helpfileautoruns.exe -the windows version of the programmeautorunsc.exe -the dos version of the programmeeula.txt -terms and conditionsRight click on autoruns.exe and send a shortcutto your desktop and you should be ready to go. The programme only runs on demand when you double click your desktop shortcut. If you get a problem with the Search Online featureplease let me know. I think you will have no problem with Windows XP.I just compared my 9 items in cCleaner with your 35!Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Here is something for you's guys to investigate:You can download a good free tool called BootLog XP and measure and see graphically your entire startup process from end to end. Then you will know exactly how long it takes and how long each individual startup process takes. Only when you know how long things take and what the slow spots are, can you make informed decisions about what to do about them, On the other hand, you could just start trying experiments and guessing. That may work too eventually, but it will take longer to figure things out.You can get BootLog XP from the following site:http://www.greatis.com/When you run BootLog XP, you will need to restart your system so it can measure things. Wait patiently for it to completely finish and you will get a graphical report and then you can see how long each startup process on your system takes and the total time. You can save the report, share it, print it, etc. If you can't figure it out or have questions, export the short text file report to a text file and copy and paste the contents of the short text file report back here for analysis and suggestions. Just send the short text report, not the long text report. Then when you start to make adjustments, you can run the BootLog XP tool again and see what effects your adjustments have on your startup time. Here is my list of startup items: That may not work for everybody though...Do, or do not. There is no try.I decided to save up points for a new puppy instead of a pony!

Gerry. I'm not sure if that is good or bad when you say that you "just compared my 9 items in cCleaner with your 35". Does that mean that my cCleaner is set to delete more stuff? I can't figure out what 35 items you are referring to. I have looked on cCleaner and I don't see chat might have added up to 35. Do I have it set to clean too much and what would you suggest that I have it do or not to have it do?

Jeff I just copied and pasted part of your earlier message into my new message. I did not think it necessary to copy the lot as if you wanted you could just go back to the original message to read all that you had said previously. Gerry - I really appreciate all help that you give me!I don't quite follow your question "Before trying Autoruns what did you about these question?" You must have typoed and I don't know what to answer. Sorry.I'll go in the order that you mentioned things in your reply. OmniPage is my password software that loads on startup. My tablet uses it along with the fingerprint reader to log me in to Windows and also to enter user names and passwords for websites once I am logged in. I need to leave it running full time to be happy. It is really nice, as you can open it and see a list of user names and passwords and a site name that you have created. You can't edit them once they are saved, but you can delete an individual item if you need to and then recreate a new one in its place.Acronis True Image Home is new to my tablet. It is the backup software used by my Maxtor USB hard drive. It is set for full-time backup, so it backups up any file that I alter and save. It saved my life when I recently needed to do a reinstallation of Windows XP on this tablet after Security Essentials was messed up. Microsoft tech help was helping me and many others with this same issue and they finally convinced me that the only way to resolve it was so start fresh with a clean reinstall. Even a repair install wouldn't fix it, they told me. I really had to be convinced for a while before I finally did it. What a hassle! So I have left the True Image software doing this full-time backup. I like that feature and the safety net it creates for me, but I sure hope that I don't ever need it again. I also hope that this full-time backup isn't slowing my tablet down a bunch. I'm sure that it isn't helping the speed any! My tablet has always been thought to be sort-of slow when compared to any of our desktop pcs. I have assumed that all tablets were known to be slow and I always have wondered why that would be.I could turn off cCleaner from running daily at startup, if that would really help anything for me. Let me know if you think that I should try that. But, I think that there is a setting which can really affect how long it takes to run. It is in Options > Settings and it is Wipe Free Space Drives. I have it checked on my C: and not checked on my E: backup drive. But below those, I just noticed that I had it checked where it says Wipe MFT Free Space. So I just unchecked it. Maybe that will speed things up? I bet it will, as I have noticed that "wiping" has usually taken quite a while! I'm going to Submit this Reply and then go run the Disk Defragmenter to give you the report that you noted at the end of your reply. I post a report in a while after I get it.

You can not edit them but you can delete an individual item if you need to and then recreate a new one in it's place.Acronis True Image Home is new to my tablet. It is the backup used my my Maxtor USB hard drive. I clicked on Action > Analyze, and it runs for a while then pops a box saying Analysis is complete for (C:). You do not need to drfragment this volume. There was a button that said View Report, so I clicked it and copied all so I could paste it here. Your reply confirms you have good reasons for leaving OmniPage, and Acronis as they are. With Acronis it is, however, a balancing of risk against performance. You could schedule Acronis to regularly back up at times when you would not normally be using the tablet. Where are you backing up to? You could test Acronis to see how much difference, in terms of performance, continuous backing up makes.I would change cCleaner.I look forward to seeing the Disk Defragmenter report. Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Acronis backs up to my Maxtor USB drive hooked to the tablet. I know it will also do offsite backups, but I'm not into that. I want all of my stuff here and not in someone elses hands! What is weird is that even now with Acronis sitting there doing nothing and cCleaner asleep, I still get End Nows when I log off or restart, as I have been getting for quite a long time. This tablet has always been somewhat slow. I would have to guess that Acronis is not my problem at all. My wife has always hated this tablet since it has always been a bit slow as compared to any of our normal desktop PCs. She has thought that it was too slow ever since it was brand new a few years ago. I guess that I just have more patience and appreciation for it.I'm a pretty lite user of any pc and especially this one. I don't save hardly any video (just pics) or music. My only heavy duty usage is with my Outlook 2003 where I have a ton of saved emails in folders from my time as a broker in the real estate business. I keep my tablet's system all cleaned up as I constantly am defragging and cleaning and backing up. The hardware seems to be all working properly and is not broken. I haven't even outgrown this 55 GB hard drive on this thing! This tablet sits on my desk, as it has most of its life, and thinks that it is a desktop pc!I have set up SyncBack SE to sync the My Docs on this tablet with my login on my kids DELL desktop, so that I can use either pc to access any of my docs. That also provides another layer of backup safety! In fact, sometimes I wonder why I even need this MAXTOR backup drive since I use that SyncBack.

Defraggler is not able to defragment the contents of the System Volume Information Folder and leaving these as they are will slow your Tablet. They will also cause new files to fragment into more fragments because their existence fragments the available free disk space. There is a solution.Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to empty your Recycle Bin, remove Temporary Internet Files and other selected options. I also recommend you click on the More Options tab, System Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore point. Run Defraggler. Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Acronis is set for full-time backup, so it backups up any file that I alter and save. How often does it do this? Is the Tablet permanently connected to to the USB drive? If the usb drive is not permanently connected to the USB drive I cannot what advantage is gained by having Acronis load on start-up?Is Synchback SE duplicating what Acronis is doing? How much much use do you make of Kodak Easy Share? What model do you have and what software version? I have just been reading some extremely critical reviews of the software, albeit from two years ago.Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell
February 15th, 2011 6:30pm

The tablet is almost permanently sitting in the docking station on my desk here at home. It hasn't been out of the dock in about 3 years. So Acronis can always perform. I should probably replace this tablet with a normal desktop pc at some point in the near future. But as a Realtor, I did have clients sign docs on the screen a few years ago to complete some transactions. Pretty cool! The clients seemed pretty impressed and it sped things along!SyncBack SE is duplicating the backup that Acronis creates on the Maxtor drive by copying the same stuff over to my desktop pc. I guess that is extra protection that I really don't need, but it sure is nice to have. It probably isn't hurting me too much as far as slowing down the startup and shutdown speeds ... I would guess!I used to bring my tablet in to my office and sync it with my network using this SyncBack. But now I am only at home and so I only sync with my other pc that my kids are often using after school. I use this tablet as my main personal computer. I also have a color-laser printer and a fax/copier/scanner/printer linked to both computers and my wife's laptop thru a router.I use a Kodak v570 dual lens camera which has a standard lens and also has a wide angle lens for better indoor shots (I was a Realtor!) http://www.dpreview.com/news/0601/06010201kodakv570.asp and Easy Share v 8.2.0.76. If I check for updates, it tells me that there are no updates available at this time. I wouldn't be opposed to uninstalling it and switching to some other method of getting my pics out of the camera. But I do like some of the features of the Easy Share ... like that you can select to have it automatically delete the pics from the camera after it uploads them and also that the Easy Share software opens and starts uploading pics when I push a button on the camera's dock.

Gerry. I am getting lost with multiple conversations going on with you (I think) about this same issue in this same posting. Now I am up here replying to your reply which is not at the bottom. Oh, this is confusing to me. Sorry. I am going to slow down my replies and hopefully only need to ever reply to your latest reply, which will hopefully be at the bottom (unlike this one will be). In this posting, you say "1. This comment is always been meaningless". I assume that you are referring to my #1 which said "You do not need to defragment this volume". Please tell why you think this is meaningless, if this is what you are thinking is meaningless. Are you telling me that my posting it is meaningless or that the program (either Defraggler or Microsoft Defrag - I forget) is making a meaningless statement? Then you say "2. Defraggler is not able to defragment the contents of the System Volume Information Folder". But later I think that you tell me to run Defraggler. Am I reading or interpretting you wrong? By the way, I have run Disk Cleanup many times in very recent history (the past week or so). I empty the Recycle Bin with my cCleaner at every login and more often than that manually. I remove Temporary Internet Files using Disk Cleanup often and with the top selection in cCleaner at least daily and I also do it often manually. Also, I have removed all of the older Restore Points very recently and of course, there weren't many since I did a clean reinstallation recently (a few weeks ago?)

JeffIn this posting, you say "1. This comment is always been meaningless". I assume that you are referring to my #1 which said "You do not need to defragment this volume". Please tell why you think this is meaningless, if this is what you are thinking is meaningless. I am a professionally qualified accountant and the interpretation of figures becomes over time instinctive. Statements based on statistics are opinions which have to be tested against other available information. When you see the statement "You do not need to defragment " many times, ignore it and see a performance improvement resulting from running the Microsoft Disk Defragmenter you know that the statement is meaningless. When you read statements emanating from Microsoft over a long period of time you realise that their employees speak their own version of the English language, much as politicians do. You have to test what they say against the results you see. Are you telling me that my posting it is meaningless or that the program (either Defraggler or Microsoft Defrag - I forget) is making a meaningless statement? Try not to confuse Defraggler, which is a third party defragmenting tool with the "Microsoft" Disk Defragmenter. My statement is specifically about the message "You do not need to defragment" which frequently appears after you have clicked on Analyse after opening the "Microsoft" Disk Defragmenter. The statement has no value. You should make your decision whether to defragment based on the statistical information displayed in the Report i.e. the real information. Then you say "2. Defraggler is not able to defragment the contents of the System Volume Information Folder". But later I think that you tell me to run Defraggler. Am I reading or interpretting you wrong? No. That is what you should do. By running Disk CleanUp to remove System Restore points you have removed all bar one file that Defraggler cannot defragment. That means that running Defraggler can move the remaining files in a way that results in the free disk spaces becoming less fragmented. Defragmenting is as much about reducing the fragmentation of free disk space as about putting the fragmented parts of a file together. Also, I have removed all of the older Restore Points very recently and of course, there weren't many since I did a clean reinstallation recently (a few weeks ago?)The system automatically creates restore points when you make a significant change. However, they are also created to a schedule, most likely daily, except that the schedule adjusts for the fact that the computers may not be used some days.Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Gerry - I hope that you did not take anything that I might have said to you as an insult or that I was doubting your knowledge. I meant only to understand things better and reply more accurately and then perhaps even make some better progress after all of this! I am a licensed real estate broker who has owned, brokered and operated my own franchise office and it is pretty tough to listen to people who know very little about real estate when they are compaining about how the crisis in real estate that we are experiencing was caused by "those greedy Realtors"! I understand what you may have been thinking about me after lumping me in with the other self-defined "experts"! But, please remember that I am not one of "those".I have been using the Piriform Defraggler for a month or two. Maybe I should uninstall it and just stick with the Microsoft Disk Defragmenter. It sounds like you have some reasons that I should do just that. I am willing to do that. I only found Defraggler to seem to be an advantage since it could be set to run automatically at login/startup. I would guess that many folks on this Microsoft board would agree that I should just stick with the standard Disk Defragmenter. This System Volume Information Folder and things like that are way over my head. I do not understand hardly any of that, but I love to learn about that stuff.Lastly, and in my defense, I thought that I must be playing with a pretty fresh computer now that I did the ton of work a few weeks ago when I did the "fresh installation" of Windows XP. I'd assume that my opinion is still pretty accurate. And since this tablet has always been somewhat slow to boot and to use, I would assume that this issue is not caused by anything that was recently installed or uninstalled or anything that might be saved in a Restore point.Maybe the real issue is in something that the manufacturer of this tablet PC, Motion Computing, put into this LE1600 a few years ago when it built it. I've got to tell you that the Windows XP disc that came with this tablet is not a Microsoft disc. It is a disc made by Motion Computing and it is labeled Motion LE1600 Operating System Recovery CD and sublabeled Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 With Service Pack 2 CD.Of course, I have upgraded to service pack 3 thru Windows Update and also updated all drivers and my programs etc. Lots of work!

Maybe the real issue is in something that the manufacturer of this tablet PC, Motion Computing, put into this LE16001. Posting in Microsoft Newsgroups for 10 years means you either learn how to handle criticism or you lose your sense of what is a proportionate reponse. Not being a computer professional helps in some situations because you can approach a problem in a different way.2 I was closely involved with the property world for 25 years.3. You broadly get the same results using Disk Defragmenter or Defraggler. My preference is for Defraggler. I just find the report generated by the Microsoft Disk Defragmenter is an extremely useful provider of information when you are trying to diagnise oerformance issues and how to help with limited disk space.4. I have never used it that way.5. Slow performance is more usually the result of a combination of many factors. The two overriding factors are the CPU capacity and RAM. You cannot do anything about an inadequate CPU other than change the motherboard and CPU, which is what you are doing when you buy a new computer. You can add RAM but this only works if the CPU is adequate for the job. If you have insufficient CPU capacity and/or RAM cannot be increased you have to reduce demand. If the CPU is constantly running for long periods of time you need to reduce the file sizes being handled and manage the time that programmes run better. If the system makes excessive use of the pagefile you add RAM or reduce the number of programmes running at any given time. 6. We have not looked the CPU capacity. I have suggested you consider adding RAM.Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Gerry. It looks like I should just skip down to your #6 and tell you that my tablet says in My Computer / Properties that it has Intel Pentium M processor 1.50 GHz, 600 MHz, 760 MB of Ram. And it says Physical Address Extension, whatever that means. I see in cCleaner that it has Mobile Intel 915 GM/GMS 910 GML Express Chipset Family. I don't know anything about all of that info. In Dfraggler, I see that C: is NTFS file system 55.9 GB, 54% Used, 46% Free SpaceI just noticed something in Defraggler that I have never used .... Action > Advanced > Check Drive For Errors. I wonder if I should try that?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak? When I originally asked this question you only gave two figures when there are three. Can we check your current position? Hard drives can cause slow performance, especially where the drive goes into PIO mode. Right click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties, Hardware, and Device Manager. Open Device Manager and select IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, right click on ATA Channel 0 and select Properties, Advanced Settings tab. What is the mode? It should be Ultra DMA Mode 5 (numbers vary) or PIO mode. If it is PIO mode you will have a slow performing computer.Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

Total 1050800Limit 1894156Peak 1581048I've looked back to find where I might have only given you 2 figures and finally found it way up there. I have no idea why I only saw or reported 2 figures and not 3, as I see 3 now. I'm sorry if I messed up earlier and I have no idea what happened as I don't remember and I sure don't take shortcuts on purpose when I am trying to get something fixed. Especially if someone is helping me. Oops!Under My Computer icon > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > Device Manager and expanding IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, I see 2 items: Intel (R) 82801 FB/FBM Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 266F and also Primary IDE Channel. If I right click on the Intel item, then Properties, there is no Advanced Settings tab. I see only General, Driver, Details, Resources. And below it saysThis device is working properly.

You need to buy more RAM. The total figure should be equal to or about the amount of installed RAM. The peak is way above the installed RAM and it will be very slow when memory usage is running at this level. Otherwise you have to reduce the programmes running at startup. Is there an advanced setting tab on the Primary Ide Channel? Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell
