source of telemetry
How is the notorioustelemetry data collected? Is this the same as CEIP? If so, and I opt out of CEIP, then Microsoft gets no usage data on RC behavior? It looks like CEIP was off by default on install of Windows 7 RC.

When the RTM is available, it will be turned off by default. You can read more about the feedback mechanisms in the following articles.Feedback and Engineering Windows 7The Windows Feedback Program You can also find information in the Windows 7 EULA.Open Windows Explorer and navigate to:C:\Windows\System32.Scroll down and open the License.rtf file. To see how to turn it off or on, open Help and Support.Type: Turn off settings and press Enter.Scroll down to see the information.Hope this helps.Thank You for testing Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP

OK I looked to that information and it say that telemetry is not the same as CEIP.Microsoft will collect information even if CEIP is by default off.So, that leaves the question: How is telemetry data collected?

Hi You just need to do some more research on this subject. In the context of the beta, telemetry would be defined as the remote measurement and reporting of information of interest to the system designer. It would be the usage data for Windows 7 beta that is collected. The articles in those previous links that I posted explains what some of the telemetry is and what they do with the data that is collected. The CEIP is different from the data that is collected during the W7 beta program. If you look at section 4 in the RC EULA that I referred to in my previous response, it explains the differences with a pre-release product and exactly how the data is collected. Diving deeper into this, the privacy statements give much more information about exactly what data is collected. See this document: Windows 7 Pre-Release (Release Candidate) Privacy Statement Click on each one of the 3 tabs on that page. The 'Privacy Supplement' page explains the details about what data is collected for each component or default program, why it is collected, and how it is used. Many more of the articles on the Engineering Windows 7 blog discuss the data that is collected and how it's used. This is about all I can find at the moment. If you need further information, you can use the following link to contact Microsoft directly. They will be able to direct you to the appropriate people who can answer any further questions. Microsoft Customer Service informationHope this helps.Thank You for testing Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP
