some domain users can't see printer
Hi We have a mixed IT suite at school: - a newish Windows 2008 server - some 6yo Fujitsu client pcs running XP pro - some brand new HP client pcs running XP pro The HP clients were built by the suppliers via WDS from one of the old Fujitsu clients. We have, essentially, three types of user: administrator, staff and students - with decreasing priviledges. I have the most bizarre problem - when I log onto the new HP clients as a student, I don't see the networked printer in the printer list, so they can't print to the network printer. The staff can print OK, and the students can print (as they always could) when logged onto an old Fujitsu client. I have tried everything I can think of, such as - reinstalling the printer both locally and as domain admin - no joy - connecting to a different network printer shared by a different machine - no joy - security settings on the printer share I can't believe that it's a server problem as nothing's changed there and it's specific to user type and client type, and all other combos work OK. I've run out of ideas and will gratefully accept any help as the staff are running out of patience. Thanks Sal Sorry - I've managed to put this in the wrong forum and can't see how to move it.

Sal, Try this. On the Win 7 machine in the search programs and files box type in the word group and choose edit group policy (local machine). Under local computer policy choose administrative templates then printers. Find "add printer wizard-Network scan page (Managed network) and dopen that one. Click the enable radio button and in the number of directory printers put a number like 100 or if you have 200 printers put that in then click apply or OK. This will allow the printer wizrd to discover and display more network printers than it can by default when this setting is not configured or disabled. Hopefully this helps. Good luck.

Hi Thanks for this suggestion - I have a fix and it's turned out to be something very specific to our set-up. Here it is in case anyone else uses con2prt. When the users log on, a GP points them to run a logon batch tile. This batch file contains the line if %location% == "ITSUITE" c:\con2prt\con2prt \\servername\print I'd already tried creating the environment variable on the new clients, but had not checked that c:\con2prt\con2prt.exe exists there too. So, I've copied that diriectory to all the new clients, and the children can now print. It doesn't answer why the staff could print and the children couldn't, but ... Thanks Sal
