slow usb copy speed windows 7
when i copy a file from a flash drive to my windows 7 PC it takes a very long time. When i copy the same file to my windows XP PC its very fast. how do i make my windows 7 copy rate as fast as my windows XP copy rate?

one is ethernet one is usb, if the usb is very slow then determine if the port or the usb device is v1.0 or 1.1 since it may not be v2.0 standard. If that's the cause determine if the correct usb drivers are installed.MCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. all are usb 2.0 and all drivers are up to date. i have come across quite a few people having the same issue with Windows 7. Microsoft seems to be avoiding the issue hoping that it will go away.

Hi, First, I would like to confirm the following questions: 1. What kind of file did you copy from Flash drive to the machine, video, document or other files? Does the issue occur when copying other files? 2. How do you know the transferring speed? Have you installed any speed monitoring software? At this stage, I suggest you transfer the same file from the machine to the flash drive for a test. Is the speed the same? Also, please perform a Clean Boot and copy other files to check the result. Thanks, Novak

it happens with all file types and windows 7 displays the speed when you copy the file to an external device
January 11th, 2010 8:03pm

How long does an 1GB file take, 5 minutes or more?At this stage, I suggest you restart the machine in Safe Mode and check whether the speed is quicker in this mode. Please let me know the result. Also, please upgrade the Motherboard driver for a test. Thanks,Novak

a 1 GB file takes about 5 minutes to copy. I started the computer in safe mode and the copy time was the same.
January 13th, 2010 7:27am

It took a little longer than normal. Please upgrade the Motherboard driver and replace another USB port for a test. If the issue persists, I suggest you reinstall USB Controllers and check disk to check the result. Thanks, Novak

I'm with you decker. I have a new install of WIN 7 and am experiencing slow transfer rates with a usb 2.0 external HDD. My rates are only around 17 KB/s. From searching on Google, it seems that others are running into this problem and I have not seen any resolutions. I realize there are almost endless combinations of hardware and drivers, but I would like to go the route of troubleshooting WIN 7 first.

Hi,I've got 4Gb RAM Windows 7 x64 ultimate. Very happy with it. Computer is very fast. Global Satisfaction = 9 / 10.The only thing in which Windows 7 is significantly slower than XP is the copying part (deleting part as well though) because it tries to understand what kind of data it's handling.btw What do you call fine? What transfer rate do you have?Have a nice day.

Hi KiranPrsad, I already fooled around with the remote differential compression (reason I wrote about Windows trying to understand the data it is playing with), and as a matter of fact, it is about the only thing that has actually a real impact. Thanks for the input.RegardsRemPS Something other than Windows? I'm not convinced at all that Linux is superior to Windows, and Mac's Snow Leopard is certainly not. Windows is far from perfect, but then, if it were, we wouldn't have this "chat" on this website wouldn't we?

Hi Dabur972,Norton or McAfee? You're kidding. Memorybusters. I like my computer ergo no Norton.RDC is the trick. It's not just a matter of perception. Turn the RDC on, and the copying will be slower (under 12 Mb), turn it of and performances on the matter will improve to between 35 and 45 Mb). This is still slow, but acceptable. btw copying to either a flash drive or an external disk.CheersRem

No question is ever stupid, mate.RDC = Remote Differential Compression, which allows applications to synchronize data between two computers in an efficient manner. That's the theory behind it. Real life is a tad different. Turning it of made my computer more efficient.CheersRem
