slow initial login -large profiles
I've noticed that windows 8 user profiles are about 4 to 5 times the size of windows 7 profiles. This creates a slow login the first time a user logs into our domain from a workstation or laptop. Other than putting solid state drives in all of our systems,
is there anyway to tweak the login process or reduce the profile size in windows 8?
After the initial login, windows 8 login speeds are simiar to windows 7 due to the cached profiles.

Do not place large file into profile. Organize your computer in more effecive way.

You might be adding something to your profiles (roaming?). My Windows 8 profile on a domain is only 1.36 megabytes which is by no means large at all.

Do you deploy Apps (AppX) during first logon?

The local profile created on the local computer is 1.36 megabytes? Are you doing roaming profiles on the network or folder redirection to decrease profile size? please elaborate. I have out of the box window s8 computer with no apps installed, that when
a user logs in, it creates an 80 meg local profile, 4 times the size of windows 7 pro.

So the image attached is my profiles. The first is obviously the default which profiles get built from, the second is a domain profile ( i blanked out account) and its only 28 MB and I have a few items on the desktop so its understandable. I
think your adding things through GP possibly. No roaming profiles, no folder redirections.

No,
Plain jane windows 8 pro with no apps installed on the laptop, with no group policies applied( I verified with gpresult /v) is still about 70 meg. My Default profile is 1.3 and my local admin is 1.8 which i am told is about right.

When the user logins the first time (initial login) , it will take a few minutes to allow the user access to the desktop or metro screen which is quite frustrating for the users, especially in the school environment that the user normally
login to different computers.
I just found out that there is a trick that can help you speed up the initial login, the trick is after the user type in the user name and password and press enter to login, then press Ctrl+Alt+Del, the "Lock, Swith user, Sign out, Change a password, Task
Manager screen" will show up then press Esc key, you will find out that you are available to use your computer without waiting for the annoying "First Sign-in Animation" screen.

Hi, I also have about 10-15 min initial log ins for a school network using Windows 8, subsequent log ins are much quicker. However your comment about staff moving from room to room means that Windows 8 is a right royal pain in the rear. The network has
XP and Win 7, these all login in good time, no worries there, but Windows 8 runs like a 2 legged donkey on the initial login, no roaming profiles, no redirection, just a plain old login... at the point of down grading unless I can find a solution quick.
